View Full Version : [SOLVED] Ubuntu installed but won't boot

I completely switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my AOA 110. I had to use a live usb and everything worked correctly in the installation (I think...) but when I rebooted it all that happens is the acer boot screen and then the blinking text-mode cursor (of death) immediately after that.

I've tried pressing shift to load grub (read it on another post) but it does nothing.

Edit: I can boot from the live usb when I hit Run without installing but when I select help it says no init found. Try passing init =bootarg

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Yes, adding boot arguments (after pushing F6) might be the solution:

I'm having the same problem on the same machine: after installing Ubuntu (and removing Windows XP) from a USB to my Acer AOA110, when I turn on the netbook I see the Acer logo and then a black screen with blinking white cursor. I pressed F2 and set it to boot from the hard drive instead of USB, but nothing happens and I can't type anything or press any buttons (other than F2 or F10 to get to BIOS)

I looked at the link you posted (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDBootOptions) but I am brand new to this and very confused. Much of what is on that page doesn't really make sense to me; I see the list of common boot options, but I don't really know what any of them mean, so I don't know what to try typing after the boot prompt!

Second question about the LiveCDBootOptions: won't anything I do there only temporarily affect the way it boots from the USB?

I'm so very confused and appreciate any help I can get!

Please boot from the Ubuntu Live cd and select "try ubuntu" then when the desktop is loaded make sure you have an internet connection and go to the site below and download the boot script to your DESKTOP and then open up a terminal and run
Code:

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

This will produce a results.txt file on your desktop. Please copy the contents of that file and paste them in your next post between CODE tags. For CODE tags click on New Reply (not quick reply)and then click on the # symbol in the toolbar.
This will give a full overview of your current system.
Thanks.

Sorry the page is confusing. The options aren't explained on the page but can be found with Google. I was one of the authors and the pages aren't meant to be all-inclusive. The supervisors of the official documentation prefer for us not to have links to outside sites in the official docs.

Added:
For example, here is a link to a page about the nomodeset option: http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Fedora/2010-06/msg00050.html (http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Fedora/2010-06/msg00050.html)
End Add.

For video problems, which are often indicated by the blinking cursor, the 'nomodeset' option sometimes works (especially with nvidia cards).

Yes, the changes made by the F6 key are temporary. If you find an option that works, you would need to add it to the end of the "linux" line in /etc/default/grub after you have accomplished a boot to the normal installation.

The first thing I notice is that there is no bootloader installed in /dev/sda. Grub should be there.
If you boot from the live cd/usb and choose "try ubuntu" and when the desktop appears make sure you have an internet connection.
Then please open up a terminal and copy/paste these lines into the terminal, pressing enter after each line.

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

Then please reboot and report what happens.

lpbryan,

You don't have Grub2 (or any bootloader) installed in the MBR.

Boot to the LiveCD Desktop, open a terminal (Applications, Accessories, Terminal), and run the following commands. When using "sudo", you will be asked for your password. You won't see it as you type.

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
Note you don't add the partition number in the second command.

Edit: Well, that was a waste of time since Quackers is already on it!

Thanks both of you. the "ubuntu@ubuntu" lines are what I typed as suggested by you, and the other lines are the responses I got.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdal /mnt
mount: special device /dev/sdal does not exist
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /mnt/boot/grub (is /dev mounted?).

They don't look promising... should I reboot anyway? And if so, should I reboot from the USB again or try to boot from the hard drive?

Side question: is grub an Ubuntu thing or something that my computer would have already had on it (it came with Windows XP installed, and the reason I decided to change to Ubuntu is that WinXP was so horribly slow and wasn't working well for the previous owner)

That should be sda1 not sdal
It is usually safer to copy/paste the commands into the terminal :-)

Well whaddaya know... when I actually type it in properly it actually works.

Thanks to Quackers and drs, I now have a functioning netbook! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Ah. I figured out my problem. I used unetbootin instead of the one ubuntu suggests. I'm thinking things didn't transfer correctly and screwed it up. It works now however.

Hi, just ran into the same problem as OP. Ubuntu won't reboot and I'm using dual system. (windows vista.)

here's the results file:
thanks if advance.

Generally we prefer you start your own thread so the issues, which may appear identical, don't get confused. Since the OP seems to have finished with this thread, we'll continue here unless he starts posting to it again.

In your case, please enter the BIOS setup as the computer boots and check the reported drive size. All of your Grub files are beyond the 137GB limit for older BIOS's and it's possible Grub can't find the necessary boot files. If your BIOS does show a drive size of approximately 137GB, see if there is an option to enable LBA or something like 'large' drives.

If it reports the correct drive size, try holding down the SHIFT key to see if the Grub menu appears. If it does and you can make a selection, do you end up at a blinking cursor in the upper left of a black screen?

At the grub prompt (you can get to it with 'c' if you get the menu):

ls # You should see the drives and partitions
ls (hd0,5)/ # Do you see vmlinuz and initrd.img ?
ls (hd0,5)/boot # Do you see vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic and initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic files?
ls (hd0,5)/boot/grub # Do you see a lot of *.mod files
This should tell us if Grub can see the boot files or not.

all i get is pre-set settings ?

Those commands aren't executed in BIOS. They would be executed at the grub prompt (if you get one). The grub prompt is probably where the system stops once the boot fails. Or try holding down the SHIFT key during boot to display the Grub menu, then press 'c'. Sorry for the confusion. The only reason at this point to enter BIOS is to check the drive size, then exit and continue the boot.

ok here's what happened. as it rebooted i held down the 'shift', didnt work and it went back to what it always does which is for a split second saw loading then it said 'input not supported'. now this happened first time i rebooted then 15 seconds later ubuntu came on.

but ever since, all that happens is it says 'input not supported' then goes to black screen with nothing happening.

so not able to get into Grub menu.

Computers do not like inconsistencies. One place says FAT16 and the other is NTFS. Should be NTFS in both.

/dev/sda2 * 20,466,810 166,761,929 146,295,120 6 FAT16

Vista would not work from FAT16 anyway, so it looks like somehow partition table got messed up.

I would back up partition table using liveCD:

Backup partition table to text file & save to external device.
sudo sfdisk -d /dev/sda > PT.txt

Then see if System, Administration, Disk Utility, click on sda2 will let you change it. If not testdisk or even just editing the PT.txt with 7 for NTFS in place of the 6 and reloading it.

mmh101
June 1st, 2011, 01:01 AM
ok i'll try that. i guess if i screw up just pop in cd from Cdlive? (beginner in computers.)

i did compress the windows partition by 20 mb before installing nubutu according to instructions from someone on internet. maybe that had something to do with it.

Yes, most likely. If you don't need Windows, installing Ubuntu on the entire drive will give you a new boot loader and get rid of FAT 16 (but I am not saying this is the only way of solving the problem).

You don't have to format the drive before. It is done automatically in the process.

then i said:

Yes, you could do that, but you are reinstalling for a reason that might be able to be fixed with two commands. If you would rather reinstall and start fresh, that is certainly your choice.

As oldfred mentioned:

Backup partition table to text file & save to external device.
sudo sfdisk -d /dev/sda > PT.txt

... even just editing the PT.txt with 7 for NTFS in place of the 6 and reloading it.

You would change the entry for sda2. Change the 6 to a 7 (or 07 or 06, if that is how it is written), save the file, and then import it back with sfdisk.
