I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 x64 from a USB stick because I'm waiting for my ODD to come. The installation went fine but when I boot Ubuntu (also have Windows 7 on this computer)I get this message:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/bd1a42d5-f763-4058-9d3f-c05dc3c463cb does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

I have no idea what this means. I've used Ubuntu many times before and never had this problem. What do I do?

I did some research and found out the 10.10 kernel has problems with AHCI. I'll try 10.04 and see if that fixes my problem.

Got the same error message on 10.04. Anyone know what's causing this?

Hi jediken21,
I am sorry that you have not received any help yet.

I do not know what has caused this specific issue, but I would like you to please boot the computer with the USB and choose to try not install Ubuntu.

Once at the desktop on the LiveUSB, click on the link at the bottom of my post and run the boot info script (instructions included).

Post the results back here and we will try and figure out what is going on.

Thanks.
