View Full Version : [ubuntu] [10.4][x64] Kernel update bug - where to report?

phillipdhall
November 29th, 2010, 05:15 AM
Where's the right place to post feedback / bug report? The recent repository update to kernel 2.6.32-26 appears, instead of updating grub2 (update-grub), to have installed grub2 fresh to my MBR.

Without getting too deep into the reasons my computer is set up the way it is, I need to maintain GAG as my primary bootloader. I have successfully restored GAG and updated GRUB2. I would like to provide feedback somewhere with the hopes of preventing this problem with future kernel releases, if possible.

For anyone interested in why this may have happened to me and perhaps not anyone else, here is a copy of the boot-script output for my setup.

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

=> GAG is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda
#### NOTE: sda is a RAID 0 member - this is misleading. ####
=> No known boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdc
=> No known boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdd
=> Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdf
=> GAG is installed in the MBR of /dev/mapper/isw_bffgigeeac_SYSTEM
#### NOTE: GRUB2 is installed in sdd2, I'm sure you're wondering...####

This is perhaps the new norm - a kernel update results in not only a grub 2 update for that install but a grub reinstall as well. This is fine if you have only that install to deal with. If, however, you had set the boot loader up to point to another install, it will be rewritten to now point to the updated install requiring a manual grub install for the intended location. This is probably fine for the normal user but can be a pain otherwise. In that sense I don't know if it would be actually considered a bug?

Why hello, Ronparent! Pleasure to have a multiboot genius on the case! Thank you for your response.

Please forgive my newb-ness, but I can't for the life of me think of an advantage to reinstallation over basic update. Why would they be doing this? Is there some advantage I'm not seeing? If this is really intentional, where do I complain?

One of my main reasons for using GAG is the super quick recovery when some boneheaded OS randomly decides to take over. I expect MS to figure Windows is the only important OS. I expected Linux to play a bit nicer with neighbors.

If a genuine genius I would figure out how to reconfigure things more to my liking that would also meet the needs of the community at large.

The basic problem is that an update of grub to load the new kernel is not useful if you are booting on a grub from another install. You would have to update that grub to actually allow a boot to a updated kernel. The programmer avoids that problem by overwriting the boot record that boots to the original install instance that you had previously booted to with one booting to one with the updated kernel (as if that is clear). Unless grub is installed to a neutral location pointed to by the boot loader which would automatically update to reflect any new kernel the problem both you and I (as well as anyone booting to more than one distro) experience will continue. So far, it has been easy to fix. So I endure the inconvenience unless the after the fact fix becomes too inconvenient to bear. So I guess the question is how to convince someone that our self imposed burden should be lightened?
