View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu 10.10 desktop on laptop?
November 28th, 2010, 11:40 PM
I currently have Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix installed on my Lenovo 3000 G530, but I noticed that in alot of HOW-TO's that people always have menus on their top panels and shortcuts on the desktop. I then found out that this is only in the desktop version of Ubuntu. So since I would like to use my desktop for launchers and storage etc, I was curious if it is possible/logical to install the desktop version on my laptop.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.:)

the only difference between netbook and desktop os is that the netbook is optimised for smaller screens(although I don't like the optimisation they did). So in your case, there is no problem.
you don't even have to choose, you can just install the ubuntu-desktop package:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Make sure you have time to install it, I don't know how big it is.
Afterwards log out and before you enter your password, but after you clicked your username on the login screen, you can select a "gnome" session on the bottom of your screen from the drop up list.
