Been using ubuntu for awhile on my laptop only got 1gb of mem though. wanting to know which desktop environment is quickest. kde or gnome?

KDE is bigger and slower as it uses more processing power. Gnome is smaller and lighter (but there are others even smaller). You have to take things like compiz and window decorators into effect as well though.

thanks yeah quick answer to this post is ima just keep gnome around then. plus i did some searchin my own after postin this question and found your same answer everywhere lol shoulda just googled it

If you want to try something lighter, XFCE or LXDE might be even better for you.

XFCE is rather similar to GNOME, and you can obtain it by installing the xubuntu-desktop package. LXDE is featured in Lubuntu, however I am not sure whether Lubuntu is supported officially and available yet in the repositories.

With a full gig of RAM, I wouldn't sweat the memory taken up by the DE. Use the one that you prefer.
