I have been using Ubuntu for a few months now and I started wondering aside from email and web browsing, what people use Ubuntu for.

For me, my main use is Audio recording/editing. How about you?

I use ubuntu to post in ubuntuforums.org.

I dualboot with windows 7, and when I use windows 7, I use it to write on windows7.com.

One day, when I'll be grown-up, I will buy a mac (should I afford one), and then I will use it to post at apple.com.

I install it, then run "sudo rm -rf /". Just to watch it die.

I use Ubuntu for everything except playing games (see: COD Black Ops) these days. And according (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?bShowAll=true&bIsQueue=false&bIsRejected=false&sClass=version&sTitle=&sReturnTo=&iId=21910) to the Wine people, even that'll run on Linux pretty well.

Besides the typical stuff (web browsing, email, IM) I mainly do networking related experiments on Ubuntu, since it's what I'm going to school for. Tonight for example, I APR poisoned the connection between my Server 2008 and XP Virtualbox VM's and cracked a user's login password using Cain. Which, unfortunately doesn't run on Linux or through Wine. Tomorrow, I plan on looking up ways to prevent simple attacks like these and beef up server-client security. Or figure out how do the same thing using Linux software instead.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 to use for a mythbox setup that I built. After playing with the interface for awhile I am tempted to convert all my computers to Linux. If only I could convince my wife to try something other than windows.

Then why are you in the ubuntu forum?:)

Ok so I use ubuntu for everything, also gaming.
I hope game developers will make their games for linux soon.

I use linux for:
Gaming, Web browsing, Studying,
watching videos and listening to music,
animation and image designing (ktoon and gimp),
web designing (dreamweaver under Wine),
video editing (for my youtube channel),
and a lot more. Ubuntu is king :)
I mean when I first started using ubuntu it was only so I could have a backup solution if/when windows blew up in smoke.
Now I only use Windows like twice a week or so, and it's mostly for things I can't do in ubuntu such as watching Silverlight streams, Netflix and to check out new ipod apps on the iTunes store.

Good question, to think about it in Ubuntu i browse the web and play klondike. My time on windows is spent working on solidworks, music converting and playing gran theft auto. Facepalm

These type threads are great.

Ubuntu does it all for us.

Official documents.
Printing.
Safe web browsing
Email
Movies.
Chatting.
Ripping.
Scripting.

If not for Ubuntu - I'd still be using Linux period. Never seen a security problem and likely never will.

I use it for everything. Anything anyone would do on a computer. Ubuntu is just a lot more efficient in comparison to both Mac and Windows for my everyday use.

I use it for everything except printing photographs. My HP Deskjet D2660 prints documents from Ubuntu just fine, but if I try and print a photo it comes out all weird; so I have to use XP for that.

But then again, I run XP in VirtualBox; so I guess I do use Ubuntu for everything.

Everything here, specifically audio work. I mainly like it since it is easy to support and offers comparable performance. I dig the server set-up, and run the server kernel on all my machines. (So far I have found little use for preemption).

Yea, Not to get off-topic here but I have tried Black Ops w/ Wine and it didn't work. So I ended up with the xbox version.
