Hi...

The flash plugin is no more functioning,
whatever i tried.

I still have Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)

lsb_release -a
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS
Release: 8.04
Codename: hardy

but nowhere i see any update notifications anymore
and i thought LTS goes on into 2011
(and now 2010 still as we all agree...)

and as i have flash installed and re-installed

but this flash is no more working.

my cd in my computer is broken
and although i have a removable working usb cd
the bios in my comp seems not to get this option
if i am not mistaken.

Please i need advice and help from someone who really knows.

I need a working Adobe Flash plugin for my 8.04 system

and then so too... i am worried about seeing
no updates anymore so i cannot upgrade
to "higher" or later version of my Ubuntu
without needing cd...

Please help,
only if you really know how to,
and valid commands and such,
so: how can i do all this.

thx

Hi...

I do not mean to confuse threads,
but i both mean "upgrade" to system higher than 8.04, in my case
(see below)

but most mportant how to get Adobe Flash working
for my system in my situation.

I hope someone could help me out

See what i had posted before in another thread
to explain on my situation:

Threads merged.

Please stick to one thread for the same issue, also try not to be so impatient (bumping your thread after 7 minutes).

8.04 is supported for a few months more (desktop version) and can be upgraded to the current Long Term Support edition which is 10.04.

If you are using a version of Firefox later than 3.0, you might try the Flash-Aid add-on here.,.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/161939/

thank you so much.

I went there and did all it required,
basically only a click

and then it said it was installed
but when for example i go to you tube,
i see

icon of

"crash flash"

or what it says is (quote):

'Adobe Flash plugin has crashed
:-("

so no video... nothing.

Despite having used the above https link.

Is there another option you know of?

Or do you need more data of my Ubuntu system?

Hope there is solution.

Hm... how do i find my Firefox version?

Perhaps it is only 3.0???

But i do not see any automatic update notification
anymore. As then i may want to upgrade all the way
to the Ubuntu version that comes after 8.04

So now... this seems the situation,
what best to do?

Thank you.

Go to System>Administration>Software Sources and find this window (see attachment) and change to... Long term support releases only

Choose that and then you should be able to upgrade to 10.04.1 next time you open update manager.

Back-Up your important data in /home before you upgrade, it may not work out well and you may have to reinstall.

Good Luck

Thank you very much. I will look for that
(like the screenshot example),

i think i will do tomorrow
(because now overhere it is late)

I will see tomorrow if i can find that
what you say
to change for updates and so on
and hope it works for me,

so i can use the Flash
but also upgrade my system
(without cd possibility in bios,
somehow i cannot set bios to
removable cd, but this is something else).

I hope to try the options tomorrow.

Thank you.

Be ready, using the upgrade method, to spend a good part of your day on the upgrade. At the end, don't forget to run the "Computer Janitor" program.

Thank you very much: i see the "upgrade option" now!
I thought it had to "automatically"
appear where usually all "automatic updates"
appear (but so now seemed to come no more).
So i have found where to find "upgrade"
from 8.04 to 10.04.1 via "update manager"
in my menu:

system > administration > update manager

:-)

I will try to find more on that Ubuntu version first,
like its "code name" and so on.

Thanks very much for all replies so far,
as these all were helpful some way,
and please forgive my initial confusion / impatience
in this thread.

Well... i will be trying to upgrade
my system from 8.04 LTS to 10.04.1 LTS
and hope no cd (as device) will be needed.

I think i will not use Computer Janitor
program if not really necessary.

I especially hope all Adobe Flash latest
plugin will also work, or that i at least can
access files that need this plugin.

Also I hope when I get 'back' the "new system"
via upgrade of the "update manager",
that I may still recognize my own desktop.
(Will make backup of files i feel important.)

Yet when it all "against all odds" would turn out to fail,
I then hope for solution, but of course I hope
Ubuntu 10.04.1 will be working okay because I really
do like Ubuntu period and do not even want to consider
another "os" for my desktop.

Wish me luck
:KS
and again thanks for all your replies.

I tried to upgrade via update manager
in my 8.04

but... after some hour or longer
that the upgrade process took

it so did not succeed,

due to some message about OpenOffice and Latex,
an 'error' message on some "dependencies", anyway
it caused the system is
restored back in "8.04"...

Then when I try to upgrade again (via update manager),
so not accepting the fact that upgrade did not work,
it after preparing for upgrade comes with this
message:

"Support for some applications ended

Canonical Ltd. no longer provides support for the following software packages. You can still get support from the community."

of which this is the list:

acpi
bug-buddy
cups-pdf
discover1
ekiga
fdutils
gcc-4.1
gcc-4.1-base
gnome-netstatus-applet
gnome-pilot
gnome-pilot-conduits
gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs
gthumb
guile-1.6-libs
human-icon-theme
libconsole
libesd-alsa0
libglut3
libgnomevfs2-bin
libgtkhtml2-0
libgtksourceview-common
libgtksourceview1.0-0
libguile-ltdl-1
libnautilus-burn4
libportaudio0
libpt-1.10.10-plugins-v4l2
libqthreads-12
libscim8c2a
libsensors3
libservlet2.3-java
libusplash0
mii-diag
openoffice.org-filter-mobiledev
pidgin-otr
powernowd
python-numeric
rss-glx
scim
scim-bridge-agent
scim-bridge-client-gtk
scim-gtk2-immodule
scim-modules-socket
scim-modules-table
scim-tables-additional
sound-juicer
tangerine-icon-theme
ttf-kochi-gothic
ttf-kochi-mincho
tuxmath
xresprobe
xsane
xsane-common

(personally I feel sorry for xsane
and cups..., then)

After that, in this window I want to upgrade further
and so click the option:

"start update"

(and had all applications closed,
nothing open of course).

But then this seems not possible
and system is 'restored' back in 8.04.

So how can I upgrade
(I had not expected this trouble)

and have to say this is my first "bad" experience
with Ubuntu after upgrading before never
had been any problem, nor have I ever
experienced using Ubuntu was a problem:
on the contrary.

If anyone knows this particular

upgrade 'problem'

and how to solve it,

please, I request your help.

- and still no Adobe Flash player working,
though I see notification:

"Firefox restart required

Firefox has been upgraded (or reinstalled) and must be restarted. Please quit and restart your web browser now."

I will do but not sure what the reason.

my version here is still
lsb_release -a

 After some search research and
fuzzing around

not being able to upgrade
from 8.04 into 10.04.1

no Adobe Flash plugin working in browser

Firefox (giving only the message "Adobe Flash has crashed"
or something

having the Gnome Desktop environment

using Galeon browser

the Adobe Flash plugin
works but no sound (yet image and so on)

But in browser OPERA version 9.04 (so not even the latest version)

ALL FLASH PLUGIN IS WORKING PERFECT !!!!!!

So with 8.04 and the Adobe Flash plugin in my synaptic it says:

"Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10
This package will download the Flash Player from Adobe. It is a
Netscape/Mozilla type plugin. Any browser based on Netscape or Mozilla can use
the Flash plugin. This package officially supports the following browsers:

Firefox 2.x, Firefox 3.x, SeaMonkey 1.11"

so this Adobe Flash version

is working PERFECT with browser Opera (even version before (!) 10.63
that i use, I use some 9.04 or still some "9-version")

Then this same Adobe Flash
is working without rendering sound in browser Galeon (Gnome)

Then this same Adobe Flash plugin

is NOT WORKING AT ALL in browser Firefox version 3.0
(no sound, no image, simply a notification of "crash message")

So... what is the 'real' problem?

Now i think the 'real' problem with Adobe Flash
is not (!) Ubuntu

and it is not Opera either,

but the problem at least is Firefox 3.0...

The upgrade problem of migrating from my 8.04 to 10.04.1
is something else, but with Adobe Flash plugin
for now working fine in at least my Opera browser (version "9 something")

I for now feel fine though still in 8.04.
