So, Natty Narwhal is the next release. After that, we've got 12 more letters. Once we get to Z is Ubuntu going to cease to exist or what?

In six more years?

Skynet will have already become self-aware and won't need version numbers anymore.

Probably just do it hurricane style... back to the beginning!

That is if Ubuntu will still exist.

Ah. Good point. I can see it all now. My computers and electronic gadgets are going to hop up, sprout legs, arms and explosive weaponry and start blowing things to pieces. Transformers style. Cool.

There are still another 44 consonants in the Thai alphabet, and maybe in 28 years we can progress to Mandarin or Sanskrit?:D

By that time, GNU, BSD and Haiku will rule the world! MUAHAHAHAHHA!

Linux will be used on handheld devices, but the few people (mostly designers and nerds) that have desktop PCs will use GNU and Haiku. BSD will be used on servers.

Well, that will be after December of 2012, so no one will even be here to use Ubuntu. :)

Besides, they've already used the letter 'H' twice, so I don't think there will be a problem.

If Ubuntu is still actively developed they may switch to something other than animals and start over with "A". They may actually use of the letters they skipped the first time around.

Hahaha, that's a good idea... until we roll over the next level and have to call it Acuntu. That just... doesn't sound good.

By the time we reach Z, Ubuntu, and computer OS's in general will probably be completely different, to the point where upgrades. Here are my suggestions:

ANIMAL NAMES.

Ostentatious Osprey
Peerless Partridge
Quirky Quahog
Righteous Roebuck
Sly Sparrow
Tactful Tapir
Utopian Umbrette
Witty Wombat
Xenogenic Xantus
Yacking Yapok
Zesty Zebra

Why have names at all? just name it 1, 2, 3.. Or 2010, 2011... and so on..

or simply ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 like it is.. Isn't that enough?

Yes. That's actually the official name. But everyone has code names during development.
