View Full Version : [ubuntu] can't boot from CD

I'm trying to resurrect an old Compaq Evo 400C which currently runs Win98. I've created a CD from the ISO download and as far as I can tell, it has burned correctly. The machine boots off the CD, I select language and tell it to run off the CD. The Ubuntu screen with the four blinking dots appears and after about 30 secs of CD action. it comes to a grinding halt with the messages shown in attachment 1591. If, when booting, I tell it to install Ubuntu, much the same happens but with message shown in attachment 1597.

I'm new to Ubuntu/Linux so the messages don't mean anything to me. Can somebody shed any light, please.

Welcome to the forums :-)

Please provide some details regarding your Hardware. If it was running Win 98, I suspect it to be a low memory and slow processor PC.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

The spec is: Pentium III 850Mhz, 128MB RAM, 20 GB HD.

If lack of 'grunt' is the problem, is there a 'lite' version which will run on this hardware?

From the link posted in a reply above............
Lightweight GUI alternative (Xubuntu)

If you have an old or low-spec computer or want to get the most out of your hardware, using a lightweight desktop system such as Xubuntu is recommended, as it should make more efficient use of your system's resources. Of course, even if you have the newest equipment out, you could still use Xubuntu.
If your system has less than 192MB of system memory, use the Alternate Installation CD.
Note: If you have a low-specification computer, certain features may be automatically turned off to conserve system resources. For example, if you have a graphics card with only a small amount of video memory (VRAM), the boot-up screen may not be shown.
Follow this link for detailed instructions: Installation/LowMemorySystems (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems).
Minimum system requirements for Xubuntu would fall roughly between Ubuntu Server and Desktop:

256MB of system memory (RAM)
2GB of disk space
Graphics card and monitor capable of 800x600 resolution

Regarding processors, a recent thread on the Ubuntu Forums describes a 500 MHz Xubuntu machine as being "too slow" and discusses alternatives: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1267443

Apologies; I posted before I had read the link thoroughly. I'll follow the advice.

As someone new to the forum, the helpfulness is much appreciated.

Xubuntu is not a good option with 128MB RAM but you can definitely try Lubuntu.

http://lubuntu.org

Minimum requirements for lubuntu are comparable to Pentium II or Celeron systems with a 128 Mb RAM configuration, which may yield a slow yet usable system with lubuntu.

Or refer here for some awesome RAM/Linux benchmarks.
