What is the best option to get from 8.10 to 10.10 - should I upgrade (via 9.10 is how I understand it), or just install 10.10?

If I install 10.10, what happens to the 8.10?

Your choice is to sequentially upgrade through the intermediate releases between 8.10 and 10.10 ie, 8.10 > 9.04 > 9.10 . 10.04 > 10.10

Or to back up your data and do a fresh install of 10.10

yes - so which do you recommend? i.e. upgrade or fresh install?

Hi, WileyGaia
I prefer you to freshly install ubuntu by taking backup of your most important files. I prefer you to install Ubuntu 10.04 instead of 10.10 bcoz i have faced lot of problems when i had installed 10.10. And 10.04 is a LONG TERM SUPPORT. So go to 10.04(Lucid Lynx). Nothing difference b/w 10.04 and 10.10. Both r same to same.
