What are you trying to boot from the USB Stick?

What make and model of laptop is it?
On many machines built within the past two years you hit the F12 key during boot up to select a one time boot device where you would select USB. Do you go through this step?
What's on the Usb? If it's Ubuntu, how did you put it together? Is the partition active?
