I just converted to Ubuntu from win. As many of you know, Win programs are stored in a particular folder. Does Linux have a similar layout? Most of my installs are from source, so i was wondering where should i zip, and install the packages?

*I tired researching it already...
*Pls only comment if you have something productive to say..

There is not quite a linux equivalent, but there is plenty of info on the layout of the Unix/Linux file system.

See:-

http://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/sect_03_01.html

There is plenty more around, but that will probably do as a start.

Most packages are not unzipped and installed in anything like the way you did on windows. Where possible, and that is about 99% of cases or more, you should install packages from the ubuntu repositories available using either the ubuntu-software center or synaptic. Don't try to download and install packages you find on the internet; that's an almost sure way tio end up totally frustrated and annoyed, and you will probably give up the whole idea of ubuntu and linux as a bad Operation System.

Using the repositories makes the whole thing at least as easy, if not more so that windows ever was, or is.

Thanx for the advice. The reason i need to compile from source is bc i am working on a cross compiler project. I am working on an arm device on a 86x system. Some of the programs i need/use are not available form the repositories.

I prob should start a new thread for this, or have asked it in the initial post, but i had one more question: What is the keyboard shortcut to delete a file?
Ubuntu 10.10.

What is the keyboard shortcut to delete a file?
Not surprisingly it is "Delete" to send it to the wastebasket or "Delete+Shift" to delete completely but not send to the wastebasket.

Yea, based on my google searches thats what i figured. Unfortunately, it doesnt work. I tired a number of combinations.

I also notice on occassions, when i shut down the computer, i get a black screen with some writing on it. I have to hold the power button to do a complete shut down.

Oh, and maybe you can help me with this. Everytime i turn on the computer i have to manually contact to wifi network. I am also asked for a 'default key'. any way to automate this so i don't have to continue typing it in?

In your wireless settings for your wifi network (rt click on it) tick the "allow all users" box and the "connect automatically" box. that should solve it.
