taskbar won't show and login sometimes fails

I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10. Sometimes, on attempting to login, the screen resets and I'm brought back to the login screen (though I know I have the right login information). The only way around is to restart. Also, sometimes when I do finally get in, my taskbars won't even appear.

The machine is an HP workstation x1100 with Pentium 4 and fairly old graphics card (using AGP). Is the computer just not compatible with linux?

Iam having the same issue - should i try to re-install??
