View Full Version : [ubuntu] Boot from USB: vertical color stripes on Dell Inspiron 1501

Trying to transition from Windows Vista to Ubuntu 10.10. This is my first Ubuntu install.

Downloaded Ubuntu from here, plus the USB loader. After getting the laptop to boot from the USB, I tell the system to Run Unbuntu from the USB, the Ubuntu logo appears and then I get a multi-color vertical stripe pattern... after 15-20 seconds, the Ubuntu music plays. But nothing on the screen changes.

I've used the same USB to boot a Dell Mini Netbook and works fine. So problem seems to be the graphics card.

The Inspiron 1501 has:
Display Adapter: ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

I've tried the various suggestions at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1501040.html
and
http://www.techmetica.com/howto/top-ubuntu-preinstallation-problems-and-fixes/
... to no avail.

Many thanks for any suggestions. -- Tim
