AnimeSuki Suggestions Forum (http://forums.animesuki.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15) has a lot of very knowledgeable members. You might ask your question there.

The classic series is Legend of the Galactic Heroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Galactic_Heroes), but you might be put off by the dated animation style. The Crest of the Stars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crest_of_the_Stars) series is another famous anime in this genre.

@madjr - The Emperor of En says "hi" to Youko-san.

Well. first of all, watch the original Macross series, not the mutilated version the US put out.

After that, Gundam is another classic, and so is Escaflowne, though it is a very different cup of tea. When it comes to realistic mecha series, my all-time favourite is probably Gunbuster. It's a short series, 4 episodes, but it is packed with awesomeness.

Moving forward, my all-time favourite mecha series is Neon Genesis Evangelion, though YMMV. Some people hate it, some people love it. You should watch it regardless, find out what you think. Personally, I think it is the greatest piece of art in the history of the human race, but I am an evageek :D

If you're in for a series with completely over-the-top action, you should go get Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan. Amazing series.

If you want more recommendations, check out my anime list (http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Sephiroth_VII&show=0&order=4).

Youko-san says "Hey there Shoryu-san!"

Martian Successor Nadesico was one that I remember being pretty good fun.
+1000 Neon Genesis Evangelion I have the NERV parking decal on my vehicle. :p
Gasaraki is a good mecha anime, not really space type though.
