Hi there,

I was previously running Xubuntu (9) on my machine and attempted to upgrade it to a new version through the internal upgrader. In the very last stages of the upgrade the computer froz and that was that...couldn't reboot, dead.

So, I though I'd install 10.10. First I downloaded the PC (Intel x86) desktop CD (http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/lucid/release/xubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso) but I'm not able to install it using that CD. I get the menu, click install, see the Xubunto logo for a while then it goes black and that's it.

So, I though I'd try PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD (http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/lucid/release/xubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso) Instead. This version goes through the entire installation process without a glitch however when I reboot the computer I get the Xubutu loader and then the screen goes black and that's it. No error message no nothing. Have tried to install it several times and have tried diff. CDs...not sure what to do.

Anyone have any tips getting a bit desperate here :-(

Cheers,

Mikael

You've mentioned trying to install 10.10, but both links above point to 10.04, which leads to a question. Do you have an Intel 8xx graphics? If so, you might want to know that Lucid had a major problem with these chips.

Try the workarounds suggested in the link above or 10.10.

My bad, copied and pasted the wrong link from the Get Xubuntu page - it's definitely 10.10 that I've installed as it says so when booting.

Not sure what graphics cards the machine got and I don't know how to check that as I don't have an OS that works :-(

Maybe I should give 10.4 a go instead - the frustrating thing is that I'm not really getting any proper error messages so it's a bit difficult to know where to start.

Cheers,
Mikael
