hi i want to make backup files to my new installation of 64bt ubuntu 10.04

understanding past problems when xcong was messed or other vital files are messed due my tinkering...i would like to make backups of all vital files before installing any of my stuff

which vital files would i need a backup of,

copying these files and renaming the new ones with the .backup extension

how to restore these orginals via removal of the.backup extension

ignore this as this is jibberish {all so that i am prepared for the future errors of ubuntu's life at my home and secure its grasp on me as a user---I DO NOT WHISH TO TURN BACK TO WINDOWS OR MAC}

Rather than trying to identify each and every file to save, and then, how to restore individual files, a simpler approach would be to simply image off your partition to a backup, make the changes, and if they fail, restore from backup.

One way to do this is with the Clonezilla LiveCD. You can get it from distrowatch.com. Boot from that and image off your Ubuntu install to another partition or external drive.

If the xorg mods work out OK, you can always remove the backup later to save space.
