View Full Version : What flash drive should I buy?

Hi! I'm looking to buy a new flash drive (8 or 16gb) and thought I'd ask the community what they like. I got such great ideas when I was looking for a mouse and I'm very happy with the one I bought. I'm looking for a drive that is very small, light (I have a brick-heavy Survivor drive right now), about the size of a pendant, and has a lanyard slot large enough for a chain. Any ideas? Thanks!

I just have a basic sandisk cruzer 16gb. It's held up to a lot of abuse for two years now.

My Sandisk Cruiser has treated me well for more than two years, also.

I've always got by with ones which were free after rebate or vendor swag. They're reliable enough as is, and with the capacities doubling so quickly, it seems a bit wasteful to pay for the premium branded drives which end up obsolete or cramped all too quickly.

All of the drives I purchase are those without the U3 carp. Also, I look for drives where the company openly supports Linux. I've found Corsair minis are quite awesome. No caps to lose and extremely small.

I have a data traveler 16 gig, that I paid twice the amount for, on a 16 gig SDHC class 10 card. The SCDH card loads and unloads at twice the speed it should generally.

I wanted a pen drive and ended with an external 2.5" hard disk. The reason is because of price. In my country, the 16GB pen drive cost rm90.00 and a 250GB Seagate 2.5" external hard disk cost rm135.00 and I just bought a pouch for the hard disk that cost about rm18.00 (exchange rate US$1.00 = rm3.20 estimate). So for extra rm60.00 I get extra 230GB storage. It is bulkier and isn't exactly pocket size but I don't find the price justifiable for a pen drive.

I recently washed+dryed my 16gb sandisk flash drive and it still works fine. :P

Thanks for all the suggestions everybody. I would get that cool Ubuntu one, but it is imperative that mine have a keychain/necklace slot and it doesn't look like that one does. But it's good to hear that those Sandisks are so good. I was looking at those but was concerned that they looked a little flimsy. As long as I can find some way to remove the U3 carpware.

I use a 8GB Patriot XT, no U3 crap with that. Got it off of newegg, still going strong.

+1. I have two 4GBs, this thing is indestructible with all the thick rubber padding around it, pretty darn fast too.
