hi downloaded the modem tool finder. Not sure if it the external modem is recognized could some take a look for me please. Any other help with installing it would be really appreciated

Am at a friends house using their internet connection to post this thanks again

For owners of a Dell PCs with Conexant HSF modems, a driver source package with full speed enabled is available, but requires driver compiling. Read DOCs/Conexant.txt


For all code packages from Linuxant.com, either a driver set matching the boot kernel will be installed,
or the drivers will first be compiled and then installed. The expert on modem software for Linux is
"Support (Jonathan)" <modem.support@linuxant.com>

Under Linux unpack with:
$ unzip hsfmodem*.zip
Then install with:
$ sudo dpkg -i hsfmodem*.deb
Subsequently, the modem should be found with
$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
Edit in your personal information with:
$ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
and try dialing out with:
$ sudo wvdial.

The directions following below need only be pursued, if the above procedures are not adequate.

Start at http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/downloads-license.php to find the
hsfmodem package matching your System. For several Linux distros, there are
precompiled drivers matched to specific kernels. These have within the FileName,
your KernelVersion: 2.6.35_22_generic
They can be found through http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php
A more precise location may be given a few paragraphs below.
If an EXACT Match with your your KernelVersion is not found, the needed drivers
will be auto compiled anyway. Alternatively, one of the
"Generic packages with source" near the bottom of the page must be used.
Downloaded packages must be moved into the Linux partition (home folder is OK)
and unzipped with:
unzip hsf*.zip
The installation command for a .deb suffic packages is, with root/adm permission:
sudo dpkg -i hsf*.deb
while for .rpm suffix it is, with:
rpm -i hsf*.rpm

Support can likely be achieved through two mutually exclusive alternatives:
1) The hsfmodem software for Conexant chipset modems: Read DOCs/Conexant.txt

If compiling is necessary packages must be installed, providing:
linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic


If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then
Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include. The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev
and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev

If an alternate ethernet connection is available,
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
will install needed packages.
For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the following command to display the needed package list:

Once downloaded and transferred into a Linux partition,

It has samples for a modem using port /dev/ttySL0, which must be changed to match your modem's port.

Read Modem/DOCs/YourSystem.txt concerning other COMM channels: eth0
Which can interfere with Browser naviagation.

Don't worry about the following, it is for experts should trouble shooting be necessary.

Your information that was posted should have been sent to Marvin and the
folks at http://www.linmodems.org, as a plain text email.

But, for right now why don't you install wvdial and it's dependencies and
see if wvdial detects the modem. You might find it works......

You need to download wvdial and the following dependencies for 10.04,
or whatever version you have installed......

wvdial & dependencies:
libuniconf4.6
libwvstreams4.6-extras
libwvstreams4.6-base

Located at:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/
Select 10.04 -> Communications Programs -> wvdial 1.60.3
Download these with XP or Ubuntu, then copy the *.deb files to USB Flash Drive,
& then to Ubuntu subdirectory /var/cache/apt/archives & then install using Synaptic Package Manager.....ie.


sudo cp ~/Downloads/mydebs/*.deb /var/cache/apt/archives

OR you can go to SYSTEM -> ADMINISTRATION -> SOFTWARE SOURCES
and check the box for installable from CDROM/DVD.........then
insert your LiveCD and install from the CDR.


You will need to set up the pap-secrets and/or chap-secrets file by running the following in a Terminal Window:


sudo pppconfig

You will need your userlogin, password, ISP provider information, and
pap or chap information for the connection. (You can set up pap and
then chap, if pap doesn't work.) Basically you just answer the questions
that are presented. You can delete a configurations and start over if
you need to from the menu selections.

man pppd
man pppconfig



Now after ppp is setup, you will need to set up wvdial. Power up the modem, and connect it to your port.
In a Terminal window do:


sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

You should get a configuration file like this at
/etc/wvdial.conf (you may need to add a few things...)

wvdial.conf contains:

Now assuming that your pap-secrets and or your chap-secrets file is
correct you should be able to use wvdial to dial the connection with:

lkraemer and azertyh success not really sure how it all happen followed your directions and read all the links you posted.

Must say the more I read the more baffled I was but it worked.

I am now on the internet with ubuntu. Can not thank you all enough for all your help.
