If you are using Unity (Maverick 10:10) on a netbook then look down the left side and click on Applications.

Scroll down the list that pops up and click on Keyboard.

Select the Layout tab and click on Add. Then scroll down and select French.

There should also be a "Language Support" option in Applications where you can change your system to French

Bump!

I suspect you have done a re-install though
