View Full Version : [all variants] seeking desktop "toys" for Lucid

I keep trying to get any of the various desktop app-let or desk-let or similar "toys" working under Lucid. So far, no joy. It seems that I need two thingies. First, I need a container or manager application. Then I need the individual plug-in toys that are available for the chose manager application. Also, I know that gnome and kde have differing requirements.

I have found:

cairo
gdesklet
adesklet
conky
docky
screenlets

Now I'm completely confused and cannot get anything to work.
Can someone here point me in the right direction?

Merci d'avance,

Here is a Cairo / GLX Tutorial. http://www.glx-dock.org/ww_page.php?p=Tutorial-Customisation&lang=en I think it would help if you describe specific problems you are having with Screenlets , Desklets , and the rest. All the programs on your list are in the software center and extra Screenlets and Desklets can be found Gnome look.org .

I tried all sorts of parts and combinations. Usually there were various on-screen issues as well as "didn't work." I know this is generic, but I was fishing in the dark.

I'll read your link and try what it describes.

What is this "gnome look" website you mention?

I loaded Cairo-dock. It looks like fun, but I need to re-work how I use the gnome bottom panel and switcher. (smile) At least I got it to work.

I'm really looking for those floating "toys" calendars, clocks, weather, various monitors and status indicators, etc. Suggestions?

Thanks,

Most people remove the bottom panel after installing a dock. GLX comes with a work space switcher to use in place of the panel switcher.

I would suggest installing Screenlets and getting it working , try the applets it comes with first and then you can find more at the link I gave you.

Which is the "screenlet" link? I found the Cairo link. Am I supposed to find screenlet details at the gnome-look site?

So many choices. Most of them right.
