I installed LL onto a USB drive about 6 months ago. When I boot from it the first screen it displays is the Ubuntu Installer boot menu with options - e.g. boot from HD, test memory etc. Then the Loading CASPER/VMLINUZ and CASPER/INITRD.LZ messages appear, and later it shows my desktop. Its always done this and I am OK with it. Now I need to create a new USB stick that will do the same thing. I have tried the Startup Disk Creator and the PenDriveLinux package. They both give me a much much longer load time and ask if I want to "try Ubuntu" or "install Ubuntu". So, how did I manage to create the existing USB and bypass the "try" screen? TIA

Some helpful links are mentioned in the above post.

I think the USB drives created with unetbootin don't ask you to Try or Install Ubuntu. They take you straight to the desktop.

Still, if you want to go the other way, you can always do a complete Ubuntu install on your USB just like you'd have done with a proper HDD. That would save all your settings/config, files etc. Just care to install Grub to the MBR of your USB drive. If you need assistance on that, please post back.

You can also do a persistent install from System > Administration > Startup Disk Creator but that also presents you with an option to Try or Install Ubuntu. So not much useful for you.

Wonder if something like this would work off the SD card in my droid phone? Probably not because the computer would need to be on to recognize the phone first instead of booting from it.

When you get to the first screen with the Ubuntu Logo, very quickly tap on the spacebar and the menu you are used to will appear.

Yes, this is a much quicker route to the live desktop.
