Christmas is coming up and my laptop got stepped on last week, destroying the screen. The screen costs significantly more than the laptop (it was a cheap laptop) and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good one.
Requirements:

Lowest operating temperature possible
500GB+ HDD, 240 is the absolute minimum.
2GB RAM, preferably more.
WiFi card that operates well at longer distances
nVidia or other linux compatible graphics card
DVD RW drive

I'd like it to have a 1920x1080 screen, but its not necessary; minimum resolution should be 1280x800 or so.
EDIT: Also, battery life is a huge selling point.

My Dell 1564 has 4GB RAM, Intel Core i3-330m processor with on-board GPU, 500GB HDD, DVD RW, Broadcom BCM4312 wireless (easy to setup if you have an ethernet connection for initial install) and runs 45C or so at idle, sometimes as low as 42, and on the high end it gets to about 58C max. The fan operates perfectly and brings it right back down to 48 quickly. I think it cost about $550 several months ago, which is much lower than your price listed.....so you could probably get an i5 or i7 for that price.

I was hoping to go with AMD, but an i7 sounds nice.

I understand. My last AMD was an X2 (TK-57 maybe?) and it ran pretty hot so I chose to try Intel instead. Others have had great luck with AMD so it probably depends on several factors to determine which runs cooler.
