A second open source Kinect contest has now also started, sponsored by Google engineer Matt Cutts. He will give $1,000 to whoever produces what he considers the coolest open source Kinect project. A separate $1,000 prize will be given to the team creating tools that make it easy to use Kinect on Linux.

now that is cool!

Microsoft is not happy about this.

They should be, as it may be the killer hardware we all needed.

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ho6Yhz21BJI) is a link to a video showing someone using a proof of concept in Ubuntu.

Yes, but there are applications of this technology for Linux beyond that of video games. Plus it is a great proof of concept. The guy who developed them is obviously quite smart, having released them so fast. Way to rain on his parade, go insult someone else.

From microsofts perspective, I'd be happy with this. After all, you still have to go out and buy the device from them, regardless of where you use it.

Of course, if the cost of the device is kept low, as they hope to make it up by kickbacks from kinect games, thats a different story but eh. They'll get over it

Im not insulting anyone, Im only saying that I dont see the use, I didnt say it was an easy job developing drivers for kinect, I didnt mention it, dont put words in my mouth that I havent said.

This is FANTASTIC news! Connect this to a Ubuntu powered HTPC and a quick flick of the wrist would allow you to record a whole TV series. Link this to HTPC with X10 controllers and the possibilities are endless.

Think of all the software that could be developed for people with walking problems or disabilities.

You answered your own question. Microsoft seriously wanted to keep this proprietary to the 360 because they will make their money off of games. They wanted this to be the thing that set the 360 apart from everything else. Now everything else has access to that special functionality.

They can't have wanted it too badly, there were no special protections in the Kinect device to prevent it being used for good rather than evil.

They actually tried. (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2010/11/08/kinect-hacked/)

"Microsoft does not condone the modification of its products," an an MS spokesperson told CNET. "With Kinect, Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering." ...

... MS will only say that they intend to "continue to make advances" to lock down Kinect to an even greater extent than they already have.

They just released this thing. I can't imagine they're going to change the hardware to prevent this hack any time soon.

At the same time, I wonder if it's worth going out and pickup one up now?

Price is too high for the device. will wait when it gets to £50 from £130

Rough cost for them to manufacture - http://www.reghardware.com/2010/11/12/kinect_manufacturer_costs/

Even if it 'works' on Linux, there is probably no useful software that it works with. On the other hand on the X-Box there are multi-million Euro games being developed. So the device will be alot better supported on the X-Box (if it isnt a complete flop).

the materials that make up the motion-powered peripheral amount to just £35

That doesn't cover shipping, labour, the machines needed to actually build the equipment, advertising, development/research, testing, factory rent, electricity bills etc.

They sold 1 million in ten days, I doubt it will be a flop. I can't wait for all the cool stuff they'll come out with. I hope xbmc or moovida get an option to use this as the remote control. Maybe they'll even use some voice activation, which works well on the xbox, even though there are a limited number of commands that it understands. I can't wait to see what the oss community dreams up for these.

Just caught this on reddit:

Basically, Microsoft is good with the open source driver now. :o
