Hey all,

I figured if anyone knew about these things, it would be you guys n gals here.

I've been wanting to get a portable PDF reader for some time,
however, things like "Nook", and "kindle" have wi-fi and all this other stuff I dont need.

All I need, is to be able to load any of my thousands of PDF's onto it from my Ubuntu PC, and be able to take it with me, and read anywhere.

That really is all I need.

No need for wi-fi, no need to be able to purchase or "rent" books online,
nothing of the sort.

So, Ive been thinking about getting this one~ Cybook Opus~Black.
http://www.bookeen.com/store/usa/cybook/opus/cybook-opus-black.html
http://www.bookeen.com/store/media/catalog/product/cache/11/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/n/o/noir_copie.png

http://www.bookeen.com/store/media/catalog/product/cache/11/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/n/o/noir.png

it runs on Linux 2.6,
and from what I can tell,
has everything I would need, and none of the things which I do not need.

Does anyone here know anymore about these Cybooks than I do?

If so,
Would I be able to simply plug it into my Ubuntu box,
transfer PDF's from Ubuntu to Cybook, and be on my merry way?

I would be a very happy camper if so. lol

It feels like it is exactly what i have been thinking I need all these years, Something I can load my books to, and take anywhere.
Very simple.
Without all the extra crap that comes on the NOOK or Kindle or any of the others.

Any enlightenment anyone can provide me on this device, would be great.

Should I acquire one of these devices?
yay, or nay? lol

Thanks for reading. <3

Wonder if you would need to jailbreak one of those...

Rasa1111
November 9th, 2010, 08:14 PM
what would that be for, Charles?

well, I just found a "contact" link on the Bookeen website,
So ive just contacted them, asking the same questions.

Hopefully a reply comes through. lol

I would love to hear of anyones personal experience with one of these, if indeed anyone here has gotten one.

Thanks for your reply Charles. <3

I guess the more appropriate term would be "rooted" like you can do with some Android phones in order to get them to run other applications.

Hope you get yer answer soon. :)

Thanks Charles. :)

Ok, Received an email back~
which says~

Hello,

Thank you for your interest and for your kind words about our Cybook.

We confirm that the Cybook is compatible with a Linux PC. However please
note that the Adobe Digital Editions software, to download DRM protected
EPUB ebooks, is not compatible with Linux.

Please, do not hesitate to contact us should you need further information.

Kind regards,
Bookeen Support Team

Ok, So what exactly does that mean?

However please
note that the Adobe Digital Editions software, to download DRM protected
EPUB ebooks, is not compatible with Linux

So, does that mean...
that I can still (with no problem), load my own ebooks onto it?

Probably. You'd probably need a Windows PC to use DRM protected books tho (guessing ofc)

If the books you own are DRM protected just crack the DRM. It is not hard and as long as you don't distribute them you will not get into trouble.

Niice, thanks my friends. :)

I was almost settled on this device..
but, I mean it is like $190,
and last night I just found this sony reader~
with a touch screen, http://www.amazon.com/Sony-PRS350SC-Pocket-Edition-Reader/dp/B003Z97FOW/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1
for like 40 bucks less. lol

So I dunno..

I also found these~
Anyone know anything about them? {whether they are good or not?}
http://www.buy.com/prod/skytex-sx-eb700-ereader-7-color-reader-and-media-player-sxeb700/q/loc/111/listingID/117595014/217656779.html
and
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/The+Sharper+Image+-+Literati+Digital+Reader/1215556.p?id=1218234934099&skuId=1215556

If anyone has an extra minute or two to kill~
would you look at them and tell me which of the 3 (+ the one in the OP)
you would rather buy? lol

damn choices... :( lol

Thanks again. <3

Nice $130 device, but when getting a coloured screen device keep in mind that is not eye friendly and unless you want onion eyes after reading a book on a plane trip, consider the eye friendly devices which imitate real paper.

That skytex reader is junk.

The Cybook is pretty nifty.

But, as always, if you haven't checked out the pocketbook readers, you're really missing out.

http://www.pocketbookreader.com/

I think I'm going to ask for a PB reader for xmas!

hey,

those PB readers do look sweet!
runs on Linux to. :KS
Thanks for the info.

From what I can gather...
If I did get one of those~
I would only be able to afford the pocketbook 360.

Do you think they are good/worth it?

re. the skytex reader..
why exactly, is it 'junk'?

Is that an opinion, because it is not well known,
or by a well known company..

or is it a statement spoken from actual experience with the device?

Although,
I too think it may not be a great decision..
it just feels "off" a bit, somehow.. lol
But still pretty impressive!

You really don't think it would be worth the $130?

the cybook does seem rather sweet to,
but for $10 short of $200.00~
it does kinda seem to be lacking and unimpressive in a few ways.

Did you check out any of the others I linked last page?
Like the sharper image 'laterali' or the sony reader?

If you could elaborate on why you think they skytex is a piece of junk, I would appreciate it.

thanks.

The question you should ask yourself is, do I want a e-book reader or a multi use device that can read books. The Sytec has an LCD screen and would put strain on your eyes when reading just like on a pc. The e-ink displays are just like reading a actual book. There is no back light so you would need to use a light to read in the dark. Battery life is also a concern. If you go with an LCD reader you would only get around 8-10 hours of continuous use. My Kindle gets around 3 weeks of use per charge.

Thanks Jeff! :)

I have made the decision to get the nook! lol
Ive gotten to test one out and use it for a bit, and I really like it!
So Im excited for it! lol :P

Should have it in 2 weeks or so.

I also got to check out , and play with the new nook color~
and they are amazing!

That is next on the list! haha
Id much rather have a nook color than an ipad, anyday.

They are beautiful little machines! <3

Thanks everyone for your help.
Much appreciated. <3

Rasa I am glad you made a decision. There is nothing wrong with the Nook. I almost went for that one myself. I also just ordered a Coby Android Tablet yesterday. I will use that for everything else but reading.

I'm 99% sure that i'm grabbing up a pocketbook 602 for xmas because it is the best for working with .pdf (most of my books, articles and publications are .pdf) and it allows you to browse by the file trees you've created.

mobileread forums is where you wanna hang out for info and help btw:

They're a good crowd!

Yeah that is a good forum!
Just found it about a week ago,
and have read stuff from it daily, since then. lol

Those pocketbooks did seem nice,
but kinda steep for what it gives you.

Also,
One of the big reasons I passed on the pocketbook~
Was because I watched quite a few review videos about them..
and every video I watched..
I could not get past the loud CLICK CLICK CLICK sound whenever you press a button to turn a page. lol

Like really...
who wants to hear that ever time they turn a page?
Not me. lol

But they do seem kinda nice.
Though far more limited than a nook.
and more expensive.

So it just didnt make sense to me to go with that.

Also..
Re. PDF's~

That is not really an issue for me,
as I can simply convert any PDF into ePUB format using Calibre.
and I hear that e-readers are mostly best with epub format.

all of my 3,000+ e-books, are mostly in PDF format also..
but Ive been converting them all to ePUB format, whenever i have some free time.
So format is not really an issue, as long as you can make your books into whatever format your reader prefers.
(which anyone can do, with Calibre):KS

Did you get the Regular Nook or the Nook Color?

Hi Jeff,
I got the original nook,
as I really wanted the e-ink screen.

nook color is pretty amazing though!
Probably next on the list..
sometime down the road.. lol

I learned that my little sister got a kindle for xmas,
So last night her and I were comparing them..

my nook,
when it came out of the package,
was using firmware version 1.4..

and the speed of it, and the kindle were almost exact, on page turns.. kindle was probably a fraction of a second quicker..

But,
Then I updated the firmware on the nook to 1.5..
and its faster than her kindle now. lol
Very cool!

The pages turn as fast as I can press the button or swipe my finger!
Im so amazed with this thing. lol

My sister is thinking about an exchange already.

<3
So glad I didnt choose another one. :KS
