Ran this last night on my P4 3.2, 1 gig ram box. I ran it as I was having no joy in installing anything always hanging or errors. So I used: http://www.dban.org/

This morning it said the disc was clean but I cannot install Ubuntu. I get the first screen, (little man in circle at bottom) then just a cursor flashing at the top left.

Any suggestions as to what next appreciated.

Tried installing Lubuntu and after the install command it comes up with a very fast line of white text in which the only word I could catch was FATAL... seems ominous?

As for booting from floppy I don't think I even own one now...

Since there are no takers --System Rescue CD (http://sourceforge.net/projects/systemrescuecd/files/sysresccd-x86/) has what you need (incl dban, but the dd command is more efficient - learn later)

get to gparted and partition your hard drive before install

Sysresccd has all you need (just about) to prepare any hdd, but PartedMagic will do the same for you at this stage.

Lubuntu is good; I was impressed with zorin os, as well; or peppermint; or . . .

Well I used the default command and it has got to: Generating Host Key and has been stuck there for half an hour?

Update

Tried the graphical interface and it worked away then threw out a sting of error messages, then settled for putting this on the screen numerous times:

pdc: reading/dev/sda[Input/output error]

Any suggestions please?

From what you describe it sounds a bit like either a failing drive, failing CD or DVD reader or a corrupted media you are using to install the OS. Has that CD or DVD been used successfully previously?

Did you click the option to install directly from the CD or DVD, or did you boot into the Live session and then select install? I had seen posts months ago of people who could not install directly (without booting into live mode) but could go into live mode and install fine.
