View Full Version : $40 Billion House

Last night I had a worker in Taco Bell that claimed to be from L.A. talk to me the entire time I was eating. He kept spouting off all kinds of facts and information about Los Angeles. He was explaining how much more expensive things are out there.

He told me that Michael Jackson's mansion just sold for $40 Billion. I thought that was kind of funny, seeing how the Today Show just did a segment last week about how a man in India just built the first house in the world valued at $1 billion.

Perhaps .......

here in UK a Billion equals
100 Million whereas in the US it is 1,000 Million.

US: (10 to Power of)
10 to the 1 = 10
10 to the 2 = 100
10 to the 3 = 1,000 (Thousand)
10 to the 6 = 1,000,000 (Million)
10 to the 9 = 1,000,000,000 (Billion)

UK
10 to the 3 = 1,000
10 to the 6 = 1,000,000 (Million)
10 to the 8 = 100,000,000 (UK Billion)

The Taco Bell worker was from LA and he was talking to forestcupp who is from Indiana. So, I'm pretty sure the billion he was talking about was 10 to the 9 = 1,000,000,000 (Billion)

Actually, traditionally a UK billion was a million million (10^12), but we switched to the short scale American usage a while back.

UK billion traditionally 10^12 now devalued to 10^9
However, 100,000,000 could be construed as 10 Crore or 100 Lakhs - one should never assume we all use the same numbering system - several companies went bankrupt in the 70's for making that mistake!

I suspect the Jackson pad went for 40 million.

PS I ate in Taco Bell once -Tulsa I think it was but the key word was once!

Sounds about right. Though sense both the OP are from the US I don't see how the UK Currency factors in this at all?

Hey guys, don't pick on Britain!

1. They still have the Pint, and their pint is 20 ounces, not our inferior 16.
2. France makes Britain's "numerical" differences with us seem petty. They barely use base-10!

you've got no room to talk about our feet and inches, UK.

i know how your little system works, so don't think it's still a secret:

five shillings in a pence, 7 pence in a taco, a baker's dozen tacos in a pound, and 32 pounds in a tonne.

And it was sold to? There are not many people in the world who can afford the mortgage payments on this mythical house. Here is a list of possible candidates: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbes_list_of_billionaires

Why were you listening to some guy who cooks ground beef and nacho sauce for a living?I didn't have a choice. I was sitting there trying to eat with my family, and he was cleaning nearby tables. He just kept going on and on even when I looked the other way to eat. Something wasn't right about that guy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000000000_%28number%29Right. Megaptera had it wrong. According to that scale, 1000 million is a billiard.

But this guy was really trying to play up how much more expensive things are around L.A., and he actually said $40 billion. I knew well before that that he was full of it.

4Bn$ maybe. I highly doubt that it would sell for 40.
Not even anywhere near $4 billion. As I said in my OP, the most valuable house in the world was just built in India, and it is valued at $1 billion. Besides, Michael Jackson wasn't doing well financially, and he wasn't worth very much (financially) at the end of his life.

Right. Megaptera had it wrong. According to that scale, 1000 million is a billiard.
No, not billiard but milliard.

For most European countries, it goes like this - Million, Milliard, Billion, Billiard, Trillion, Trilliard, where the latter is always 1000x of the former.
