I have Win XP. I wanted to install Linux system on my laptop which is BENQ JoyBook A52E. Unfortunately, my internal dvd-rom is broken. I bought external dvd-rom which is Transcend. But I cannot install it. It's not booting from Boot because my BIOS is so old like 4 year old. It's not booting from USB device. What should I do? I really want to use Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu virtually. But i don't like it. I want ubuntu as my main OS. Please help me.

Does your BIOS support USB boot. You should be able to see USB options when in BIOS. Have you updated BIOS to newest version? If so perhaps CD may work better than DVD.

My portable is about 3 & half years old and boots from USB devices. I have changed to flash drives as I can keep updating them.

If not you can either replace CD or remove HD and plug into another computer that you can use to install. Just keep generic drivers, if offered to change until reinstalled into your portable.

I saw in BIOS. There are two things related to USB. USB FDD and USB Key. I don't know what they are. I tried to update my BIOS. But it somehow didn't work.
Do you have any reliable links to boot from USB?
Also I like the idea of installing in another computer. How can I keep the generic drivers? Any tutorials?

I found my USB flash under hard drive choice with my BIOS you may also want to look there. You can then also try the usb flash drive.

Using another computer is just like another install to a second drive. The most important thing is to make sure grub is installed to the second drive's MBR. You have to use manual partitioning to get the combo box that lets you choose.

Maverick partition by hand to use free space:

Thanks, dude. I took my HD to another computer and installed it successfully. Now I am enjoying Ubuntu. :guitar:
