maybe you need to install gnome-alsamixer from synaptic then set your prefs

Er..

apologies if this is too obvious, but just in case...

There is a small sound icon on the menu bar, that if you left-click you can set the sound volume and sound preferences.

If you select Sound Preferences and then the Output tab, do you see the USB speakers at all? If so, are they selected as the default output?

I am actually having a similar problem, but my speakers are not showing up in the preferences. I did lsusb and found that they are detected. I am very new to ubuntu (11.04) and linux in general, help would be greatly appreciated.

I installed pulseaudio rebooted and now it works.
