Just a note to all those who, on upgrading the OS to next version, break their MySQL installation. It then won't uninstall or reinstall properly leaving you in no man's land!! :(
This link works for me, It completely purged my system of the old broken MySQL. I then reinstalled LAMP to complete the repair.
