Using Ubuntu Netbook Remix
Suddenly today when I try to open any folder from Places on the panel, instead of getting that folder, I get the VLC playlist window, which then tries to open every file in that folder! I tried uninstalling and re-installing VLC. Anyone else see this behavior? Any ideas of how to correct it?

this happened to me a couple of times in the past.

The way I remedied it,

Was to open up "computer" or "file system"...
Then once in the file browser, looking at all the files, go into the home folder...

Once in the home folder..
Right click any of the other folders, ie, downloads, pictures, music, etc..
( Or you could right click on the home folder to do the same thing)
then choose "open with another application"
174716

when the list of applications comes up to choose from..
choose "open folder".
and make sure you check off the little box, that says.. "remember for this type of file"
174717

After that, when you open any "places".. it should open as it normally does.

hope it helps.

Many thanks. Your solution worked for me too. It seems I got this problem after some heavy usage of VLC. The funny thing is, I tried solving the problem via "System->Preferences->Main Menu" but could not find the "Places" menu item. Thanks again :)

Open VLC and choose directory and take a path to music or video you choose to play or
it will happen aqain. Seems if you right click on Video or music and choose play with VLC it
will open everything in VLC eventually.

:) Good to know, glad it helped. <3
The solution was given to me by another member here when I ran into the same problem.

I really don't think that is the cause.

I use "right click>open with VLC player" daily,
and it doesnt cause anything of the sort.

I can't recall exactly what causes it..
But I remember, the 2 times it happened to me..
I had done something, and made a "wrong click" somewhere...
That is when it happened,
and both times Im pretty sure it was caused by the same thing..
what exactly.. Im not sure..

But I can't believe that using right click, open with vlc,
is the cause.
Simply because I do it everyday, multiple times a day..
and everything is perfectly fine.

The only 2 times it has happened to me is when I was being "erratic" in my clicks.. lol

Evening All,
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop and as of yesterday VLC keeps trying to open anything under PLACES.I did what they said chose OPEN FOLDER and checked it but to no avail. It is like a virus that only goes away if I remove VLC.Do you have to log in as sudo to make the fix work ? Thanks Mike

Hi Mike,
I am pretty sure you don't need to use sudo to make the fix work.
No root privileges required.

At least not the 3 or so times I have found myself having to make the "fix".

Sorry I cant be more help. :|

Is that on different computers or does the problem keep coming back ?

I downloaded the latest VLC,to no avail..Will keep tinkering. Thanks Mike

Are you sure this is not a virus ? I have Clam antivirus but the problem remains.I can go to Places, from the Computer spot down and the menu works right.
But from Home Folder to Downloads VLC keeps starting.Am I not using the fix right ? Is the fix permanent or does the problem come back.Have remove and installed VLC 4 times.

Went PLACES,COMPUTER,FILE SYSTEM,HOME then right clicked on each folder and checked use OPEN FOLDER.Is this right ? Thanks Mike

Hey Mike,

It happened twice on my computer,
a couple months in between the 2 times.
and the 3rd time I did it was on a friends PC.

I really, highly doubt it is a "virus". lol
The very first time it ever happened to me,
was right after a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10.
Nothing but stellarium and VLC had been installed,
the rest was an hour old install.

Just a bug, I do believe.

I only had it come back the one time,
and the simple fixed put it back to normal.

Im not sure exactly what causes it..
but I am quite sure it is just a bug.

No, you don't have to do it for each folder..
Just right clicking on the HOME folder,
and doing it to that, should be enough.

But you must make sure the little box at the bottom is checked..
"remember this application for "folder" files"

So,

You go into File System,

Right click on the Home folder..

Choose "Open with other application"

In the new window, Choose "Open Folder"

and before you exit/hit OK,

Make sure the little box is checked off.
"remember this app. for "folder" files.

That should be all you need to do.

If that doesnt fix it for you,
Im sorry, Im not sure what else to do. :?:

Good luck.

Fixed ! So on my computer do this

1 Go PLACES
2 Go COMPUTER
3 Go FILE SYSTEM
4 Go right click on FILE SYSTEM next Properties then open with
5 3 choices VLC,OPEN FOLDER, or FILE BROWSER so check the circle with Open Folder and it,s cured for now.

Thanks Mike:D
