View Full Version : [ubuntu_studio] Can I do the following with Blender?

I want to finally quit windows and propietary software. The only thing that stil ties me to that OS is video editing. I use Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

I wonder if blender is a good substitute for AE, I know that premier could be pretty much substituted by Cinelerra but I don't know much of blender. All I read is about 3D modelling.

What I do is:
- Motion graphics
- Video compositing (mostly footage with chroma alfa channel, no 3D modelling)
- Masking, rotoscoping, tracking
- use lots of text
- 3D motion tracking, 3D video layers (for compositing)

I've seen very impressive results of motion tracking with Voodoo, which is a big hope for me, but as for the avobe mentioned I can't really find anything that proofs to me that Blender can do all that.

So if any blender user can clear that doubt from my head, I will start following the extensive Blender wikis.

Thanks a lot.

I havent used blender in a (long) while, and Ive never used it for videoediting, but afaik the answer to all your questions is 'yes'. There is very little you cant do with blender. Thats both its strength and weakness IMO. You may find its not very intuitive. Anyway, if you google around, Im sure you will find examples. Like these ones:

Thanks both. I've seen Sintel, I thought it was awesome and high quality, but it's not what I want to do. I want to work mailnly with video layers. Masking out some parts, using the chroma etc. I've found some great wiki, ad wikibooks like "noob to pro" but they're long and I don't really have much time. I went through the index but didn't really find exactly what I want.
