I've never encountered a Yahoo outage myself, so I was a bit surprised.

Ain't that the truth... Yahoo could've had what Google has now if they would've played their cards right. I used to use Yahoo for everything, but I've been with Google since around 2004.

But back when I did use them they had their share of downtime, but given the world didn't revolve around Yahoo as it does Google now it wasn't media worthy. Check Google Groups for 'Yahoo Down' posts from around 2000-2005. Lots of them.
