OK, I'm pretty sure I did something stupid, I just cannot figure out what it was. Googling not helping me so far, but may be due to my inferior Google-fu...
My problem is that for some reason Workspace Switcher has stopped working, specifically I cannot use Control-Alt-Left/Right to switch workspaces, clicking on a workspace doesn't work, Ctrl-scrollwheel with the mouse does nothing. It works just fine with all of the above methods if I'm running Metacity.
So, I'm thinking that I've somehow killed the config for the Workspace Switcher in Compiz. Except I have no idea where to troubleshoot this one - can anybody help out, please?
