Installation hangs at Detecting file systems

Can anyone tell me why the installer would hang here?

The last thing it says in the console is Step_before = stepUserInfo which I assume refers to me having just entered a username and password on the previous screen.

This could be because you are installing over a RAID see

Thanks, but it's just on a laptop. I don't get the errors shown in that thread either. It just hangs without any sign of a problem.
