Hi,

This is what I need to do.

I require a system that will play music for a restaurant. The PC will be a dedicated music player. Must use a simple touch screen interface for selecting playlists and songs. Audio format will be either Ogg or MP3

I need to know what software to use for a player ?
I need to know what touchscreen software to use that works well ?
I need to know what soundcard gives decent quality output ?
I need to know which SMALL touch screen will work well with Ubuntu ?

How could i split the stereo output to 3-4 seperate stereo channels to drive 6-8 channles on a amplifier. Know of any amps like this ???

Any suggestions on minimim spec hardware required to do this would be great.

I'm pretty sure this has been done before...

They also have PyCar for small screens.

Thanks, bit of overkill but I will look at it.

I'm quite happy to have a normal desktop with somethink like xmms but touchscreen interface is what i want.

there's a 6 page article about building a Kiosk, within Ubuntu (i think), in linux format UK (http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/) this month. i don't think it's online though :(

it mentions
http://openkiosk.sourceforge.net/
http://extragear.kde.org/apps/kiosktool/

and for touch sceens
http://www.elotouch.com/
http://www.magictouch.com/

it also mentions VIA EPIA motherboards because you probably won't "require much oomph", and "to cut down on breakable parts, look for an Nvidia graphics card that doesn't have a fan e.g. a FX5200 or an older Matrox card."

"also, certain touchscreens will only work with older versions of X Windows, so it might be worth checking ahead"

it keeps mentioning Ubuntu's Failsafe DE, i have no idea what they're on about lol, but i'm sure it's obvious (that's Failsafe not failsafe)

what would you do without me?

I notice the Elo touch screens seem to have pretty good linux support.

This is a very old post... but if you are looking for a centralized music playing solution for use on Ubuntu or linux in general.

Google MPD

Very useful application!
