Is ubuntu planning on being a mentor organization?

The current list does not include ubuntu:
http://code.google.com/soc/

Does anyone feel it's important that ubuntu participates again? Why or why not?

I'm sure ubuntu could benefit from this alot.

Yes because having my system being a sitting duck is such an appealing thought.

Can SElinux and a firewall make that big of a deal?

HAHA...

Proactive security doesn't stop there, there are tons of compiler flags that can help avoid buffer overflow attacks..

And yes, it does make a HUGE difference, just for FC3 we avoided around 50% of the published holes using just proactive security..

Now you might not think that fixing half of all security bugs out of the box is a big deal but I most certainly do.

Eiterway, Proactive security or not.

We could still benefit from a good hard code-a-thon.

Bring on the source code goodness!

I hope they work on Gaim.

I would prefer full C# 2.0 support in monodevelop or .NET 2.0 library fully implemented in mono. Actually during summer I will have time to tweak some things myself :)

This would be a GREAT project under Mono/Novell mentorship. Wonderful idea.

I see an excellent suggestion for Mono. I also saw work on gaim requested. These are great suggestions for those projects and should be directed to those organizations as well as suggested to google. This can happen here: http://code.google.com/soc/studentfaq.html

Let's try to stay focused on Ubuntu. What SPECIFIC ideas would you have to improve Ubuntu in the timeframe allotted. There are bounties already available @ https://launchpad.net/sprints/ubz/+specs. Let's try to be creative.

I'll start, I'd like to see some more work go into last year's SOC project: the add/remove applications with details and categories. I'd like to see this get more automated, with the descriptions of programs already intact. A rating system would be dangerous. I think screenshots should be included in the add/remove.

since you know so much about it, and want it so badly, what is stopping you from doing this?

Looks like someone created a wiki page for 2006 ideas. It is here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SummerofCode2006

Please use this page for ideas, and this forum for discussion.
