First question: Please could someone tell me whether I can upgrade from 9.10 directly to 10.10, or whether I should upgrade to 10.04 first.

Second question: Will upgrading from 9.10 to 10.10 (or 10.04 to 10.10) affect my network settings? I share internet on two laptops (one running 9.10 and the other 10.04) via the built-in wireless, and it works well. I wouldn't want to lose that.

Thanks

1. No you must upgrade to 10.04 first before upgrading to 10.10.

2. As long as you don't do a clean install, you should keep your settings.

technically that's not true. Although I wouldn't recommend it. You can change your repository list to maverick's and then upgrade. For the longest time i've been sitting on 9.10 because it's so stable and just using the lastest stable releases security packages. lol also not recommended, unless you know how to fix a problem. I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 recently and it totally screwed my system but doing a package backup with apt-oops and later reinstalling xserver-xorg-core with 10.10's repositories fixed the issues. Nothing against the dev's because I absolutely love ubuntu but for people who aren't CLI savvy, i suggest upgrading to new distro's by doing a backup and then a clean reinstall with the new version.

I've tried to upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 LTS and it has crashed my laptop and desktop each time (twice each). It seems that there's a problem with the display (sorry, novice at Linux) or something.
I just read the previous response and noticed that there's someone else having the same issue as me.
Question: How do you a backup of your current settings and restore back into the new version...
My apologies for my lack of knowledge...learning as fast as I can :-)
