impossible to type

I have done a clean install of 10.10 in an attempt to sort several problems. Now I am unable to type anything in the boxes in Thunderbird, Chrome, firefox and the rest. Sometimes I can get in one or two letters, then it stops, and not even the space bar will work.

Strangely, I can type letters on Abiword with no problem.

I am completely stuck and would appreciate advice and help.

Since you can type it seems no to be a hardware problem. Check with a systems monitor like htop or top if the browsers paralize your system.

Thanks Slooow for the quick reply. I am not certain what to look for in the system monitor. I had a quick look, but it doesn't tell me anything. By the way, I am typing this in the forum box. It works, but it's slow and hard-going, and some letters are skipped, causing me to go back and fill in.
