Excuse for my ignorance. Im a noob in linux world. Do I need to be connected to internet in order for me to install softwares such as XMMS? tia ](*,)

yes, you do. The repositories are on servers connected through the internet, if you are not on the internet when trying to access them, you will not be able to access the archives.
