View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu 10.10 can't dual boot to windows 7

Few hours ago I installed ubuntu for the first time on this laptop.
Everything went fine, fixed some stuff. So I wanted to go back to windows 7 for a while. Since I where in ubuntu I restarded my laptop and waited for the dual boot to show up, so I could chose between Ubuntu and Windows 7.
Clicked enter on Windows 7 and the screen went black for 2 seconds and putted me back to the dual boot screen. Clicked Windows 7 again, and it sent me back to the dual boot screen again. This is really confusing, can't figure out what is wrong. (the last thing i recall doing is making windows 7 the first priority in booting up. So when I turn on my computer the dual boot will open windows 7 at the beginning.)

The Grub loader over-writes the Windows MBR. You can repair it with a Windows repair cd, sometimes by running the "repair my computer" 3 times. If that doesn't work there are several other options so don't worry too much :-)

i have a windows cd but what should i do?

Edit, will FIXMBR in repair delete dual boot between ubuntu and windows : /?

Is your bios set up to boot from the cd drive first? If not set it that way. Then put the Windows cd in the drive and boot up the pc. You may be asked to press a key to boot from the cd and you may be asked to press the R key for the recovery console, do that.
When the recovery environment appears select "repair my computer". It will then search for Windows operating systems. It may not find one the first 2 times you run it. On the third try it should find the Windows system and ask you if you want to add it to the boot record. Answer Y for yes, then reboot if it runs ok.
If this option does not pick up the system click on "next" or "advanced options" and select "command prompt" option. Then in the command prompt type

bootrec.exe /fixmbr
and press enter
there is a space in between exe and /fixmbr.
After it runs type

bootrec.exe /fixboot
and hit enter (same space)
After it runs reboot and the Windows 7 entry in the grub menu should now boot Windows.

Edit: ill try a windows xp cd
It actually detected already the Windows 7 entery. But when i went to dual boot it still did not run windows 7 and my windows 7 cd doesn't have recovery console.

What happens when you run the cd? If it's a Windows cd (and not a recovery cd) it should have recovery tools, as far as I know. If not there are websites which offer the cd for download.

For W2K and XP, boot with the Windows CD, enter the Recovery Console, run fixmbr.

For Vista and Windows 7, boot with the Windows disk, enter the Recovery Environment, run Bootrec.exe /FixMbr.

Sometimes, you also need to reset the active partition.

it showed it was successful, restarted pc and is still not working.
What I have noticed is that it shows that my windows 7 is installed on the D drive but it is installed on the C drive - . - don't know what is going on.

Maybe by a chance the dual boot is trying to run windows on D but cant find it so it turns me back to dual boot screen and in reality its installed on c?!

The question is: Do you want to keep Windows as the main OS?
If yes, I guess you need to boot from your Ubuntu's LiveCD, Run GParted and make sure Windows-Partition is bootable. You need to check the flag.

You didn't mention that you have 2 hard drives, did you?
It appears from the boot script that grub is not installed in the MBR of either disk, which is where I would expect to find it. Is your bios set to boot from the first hard drive? Is it changeable?
Are both hard drives internal?
These details need to be known before proper advice can be given to you.

Can you confirm which hard drive the bios is set to boot from. I suspect it is the first, which is why the /fixmbr has not fixed it.

I managed to delete ubuntu somehow, and it automatically entered windows 7. It was written that windows was on D. But when Im in windows right now it shows that windows runs fine from C - . -
Well well, will try to install ubuntu again tomorrow and see if the problem still occurs.

If Windows is on sdb and you put Ubuntu on sda I think there may be problems ahead. Not insurmountable problems, but it would be easier the other way round I believe.

I believe Windows prefers to be on the first part of the first disk. It thinks it's there even when it isn't. It's a Windows thing, not an Ubuntu thing. It may possibly mean that Grub may need to be installed in the MBR of both drives, but I'm not certain about that.

Okay, couldn't sleep so guess I'll take some pills to sleep.

Allow me to disagree with you. I have Windows XP and it's installed on sdb which is IDE HDD - 40GB. I have no problems at all with this. If you check my signature, you'll come to know that I have 9 Operating Systems installed, 8 on sda and 1 which is Windows XP on sdb. GRUB2 for Ubuntu is my main boot loader and from there, I can boot into all the other.

However, in case of dual booting and in case there's only ONE HDD, then yes, it's much better to keep Windows on sda1 which is (C: ) in Windows.

I'm sure about this because I spent lots of time to test these stuff :)
That's why actually I have many OS's :)

Okay, someone needs to correct me if what I'll write here is wrong.

From the above result, it shows that Windows is Installed on sdb1 (which is the 2nd HDD).
On sda1, there's boot manager, I believe it's BCD.
sda2 is a Windows Partition but from above, it doesn't show it has Windows Directory.

sda5 is the root for Ubuntu.
sda6 is the swap partition.

There are lots of scheme for partitioning and for installation in Dual Boot System, especially when there are two HDD.

First of all, there's a nice guide in my signature, try to have a look at it. There are lots of useful links in there.

Second of all, I guess (IMHO), the best scheme is to install Ubuntu in a separate HDD but GRUB2 for Ubuntu should be the main boot loader. In your case, if you have other boot loader manager, I guess it might be a problem. I've never used any other boot manager so I'm not going to assume or guess anything. Maybe someone with more experience about boot mangers could help in this. However, if you managed to remove that boot manager (again, I'm reading the above report and based on that I'm writing this), use Windows Boot Manager to boot Windows, then it would be easier to install Ubuntu and its GRUB will take control of booting.

Or, you could install both on the same HDD. It's all up to you.

Windows will always "think" it's on C: that's its problem :-)

I'm curious amjjawad as to where grub is installed on your system (which MBR or both).
Well, in my case, ALL Linux-Distributions' boot loaders (except Ubuntu 10.04) are installed in their partitions. For example, Fedora 13 is installed say (because I can't really remember the exact location now) sda8. Fedora's boot loader is also installed in sda8. That applies for all the other distros.

Windows XP has its own HDD and obviously it's boot loader is installed in the MBR of sdb.

Ubuntu 10.04 is my main OS and its boot loader is installed in the MBR in sda. Ubuntu is on sda1.

ALL Linux Distros are sharing the same swap partition (yes, I know about the disadvantage of this but the advantage is great) and only Ubuntu has /home as I don't care much about the others.

I did this step just to understand how things work. It helped me a lot indeed.

Is it? hmmm, I had Windows7 for few days but didn't notice that. But yes, at that time, I had no Linux so maybe that's why :)

So, where exactly Windows 7 is installed? and why on sdb1 is showing Windows Files? just curious.

Oh, and is there any boot manager as I said or that's wrong? I mean BCD.

Hmm interesting. My Windows installation wouldn't boot like that. I had to install grub to the mbr of sda AND sdb, otherwise it wouldn't boot Windows. Anyway, Windows has gone now, so that's all in the past :-)

I had very weird setup before I install all these Operating Systems. Now, everything is fine. I don't use Windows, I keep it just in case I need Photoshop :)

You have installed grub to the windows boot sector. The fixboot should fix it. Or better use testdisk per link below.

Fix for most, a few have other issues, better than windows fix in many cases as it also fixes other parameters:

So next time i install ubuntu. Is it better to install it on C?
Here is how i did it.
1.Stored my valuable information that can not be downloaded from the net to a flash drive (a ctually two).
2.Full Format.
3.Ran windows 7 disk. Made one Partition ( around 70 GB) for C: of windows. NTFS file system is obligatory. It asked for 100 mb for its own purposes. The other space i left unallocated.Installed it.
4.Ran Ubuntu Live USB. It detected the windows created partition as sda1 and the other (100 mb) as sda2.Than i grabbed 40 Gb sd3 for Ubuntu root ("/").ext4 file system.The left space I use for storage. If you use Mainly windows you should create it NTFS. linux manages to access NTFS whereas Windows doesn't even read ext3/4 normally.( There are some ways to access ext2/3 with additional drivers in windows but they are mainly made for xp and windows 7 is not exactly happy with them).If you , like me , use mainly ubuntu make it ext3/4.Then i made the storage partition home/ directory for linux. Whenever I need information from My storage to be accessed from windows I just copy it to the NTFS partition i created for C: of windows. The ubuntu installer, installs the linux bootloader over the windows one but not causing any damage to it so you can run both smoothly.

That works great for me as i intend to use windows only if i need to get my full capacity of video card for application that can not be ran with wine.Everything else I do under Ubuntu.I haven't actually tried to make my storage NTFS but i do not think there will be a problem. The next start of windows 7 will label it and you will be able to use it freely that way.

But that is just my option of doing it :P
