netbook has intel, girlfriends has intel, and mine has an nvidia one. don't have any problems with any of them. id be apprehensive to go with ATI. there doesn't seem much point since nvidia VDPAU GPUs are nice and cheap and i wouldnt need anything more high end

Desktop - Nvidia GXT 260
Netbook - Intel
Desktop 2 - ATI Radeon 9550
HTPC - ATI All-In-Wonder-HD
Desktop 3 - Nvidia 9400GT
Server - Nvidia 9400GT

I usually stick to Nvidia tbh.

I have an Nvidia GeForce 6150 so I voted Nvidia. Not that I made the choice. I just have 5 or 6 year old Compag Presario cheap computer from Best Buy and that's what it came with but I didn't check it before I bought it.

So I can't find it now. But I swear I saw that nvidia or ATI was going to be done with.

Maybe both.

I seem to remember ATI was going to go away and just be branded as AMD for now on.

And for some reason I seem to remember something changing at NVIDIA as well.

Have I totally lost my marbles, or does anyone know if any of that is true?

ATI is going to be branded strictly AMD now - AMD Radeon, etc.

IMHO it sounds.. strange, but that's probably cuz I am used to ATI...

I tried ATI on my desktop and it was bad, so I am using Nvidia now. I have an Intel video laptop, but I really want to get rid of it in-favor of something more powerful (probably another Nvidia). So I voted Nvidia.

All ATi/AMD, because currently, Nvidia's GPUs are hotter, more expensive and slower. Of course, this might reverse in a year or two, as it usually does, and I'll switch over to the green team then.

I bought an Asus Nvidia based mother board so I combined it with a Nvidia graphics card. I had a boot problem in 9.10 prior to installing the recommended Nvidia driver. I was also using Wubi at that time , it was my first try with Ubuntu .

The old laptop has an old Radeon Mobility X300. Everything works ok with the open source drivers in 10.04, but I couldn't run 9.XX with it.

In my desktop, I'm running an Nvidia 6200 that I picked up new for $40 a couple of months ago. I had an old ATI Radeon 9500 pro in this rig, but I couldn't run 10.04 without having a seizure looking at the wiggly, flickery screen. Plus, the fan quit running on it, so I figured it was time to go. That old Radeon still outperformed the Nvidia.

nVidia 9400GT. It supports my multi monitor setup out of the box with no configuration required.

How is your luck with getting good 3D performance (with games) and good OpenGL support? I have a old Radeon X300 and I cannot run any sort of newerish game that uses OpenGL it seems. Even native Linux games.

I have a little bit of everything. My laptop has X4500MHD Intel HD graphics. Very impressive for a $249 laptop.

My daughter's laptop has some old ATI X1200 integrated on it.

My son's computer is nVidia integrated 6150SE.

My wife rocks a 1GB ATI HD4890 with her Core i7-920 whitebox.

The computer I intend to build will have either a leftover 512MB ATI HD4870 or I may purchase a new HD5770 or two. Maybe better. I'm pretty happy with Intel and ATI solutions. Do wish ATI would make their 2D performance better than late 90s tech, though.

nVidia is the best in the market.

Sadly enough, I can't afford a computer with nVidia in it, so am forced to stick with Intel even though it's the worst of the 3 (nVidia/ATI/Intel).

I have them all.
I voted for nVidia as that is what Id chose, but my main PC currently has an ATI 4870, and its not been a great linux experience to put it mildly. A Geforce 460 is on my wishlist.

3dfx Voodoo.Awesome!!
Their box-art was the best around back in the day.

My current ones;

Main Workstation/Desktop - Nvidia GeForce 460 (Asus)
Secondary Desktop - Nvidia GeForce 220 (Asus)
Netbook - Some Intel crap

When I have a choice, I prefer nVidia. That is - as for others - mostly from historical reasons, I never had much luck with ATI cards/drivers "back when". The nVidia drivers "just worked" and gave me good results.

But recently I've been more concerned with other issues, so what video card was inside didn't really enter into the decision. I now have a mix of nVidia, ATI and Intel. Not much of a gamer anymore, so the most critical video capability I need is to play video smoothly which isn't too hard for most of them now. And that's only on a couple machines - most of mine are headless servers, where I couldn't care less.

What Linux support does it have? I chose Nvidia because it seemed that I would have less problems getting the setup working. GeForce 8500 upgraded now to GT220. And I did not.

Moral of the story for manufacturers? Provide Linux support for your products and you will sell more.

Regards.
