Server question

If I were to play around with setting up a web server, XAMPP. Can this be done on the same desktop that I run Ubuntu 10.10 or does a server have to be on its own machine?

Yes you can do that on the same machine. The server is just a program (process) that runs on you machine. You can even have more servers on the same one :).. But at place of XAMPP try may be LAMP

You can also be more careful and may be make a virtual server on your desktop. This way you test how it works. Look at apparmor also before making your server or chroot.
