What next

Brand new to Ubuntu, created CD put it in my Laptop and booted but all i get is this message on a black screen

No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found
boot

Any ideas, please

How did you create the CD? Have you changed the boot order in the BIOS?

created CD from Ubuntu download and burn and i have changed boot order to CD

When you created the CD did you burn as an ISO?

Have you tried the disk in another computer to see if it boots?

i burned it as directed on the web site and if i look at the disc the files are as they look on the ubuntu instructions, no other machine to try it on.

If your computer is able to boot froma USB device, you could try and create a bootable USB thumbdrive with Ubuntu on it and see if you get the same result

This USB would act like a LiveCD (assuming your comp can boot from USB).

Or you could also try and burn another Ubuntu ISO with the lowest settings (speed) you can get from your burning software.

Not sure how far into the boot sequence you are getting, but if you get the boot menu, try to switch off ACPI from the options at the bottom of the screen.

Using a cd RW i did a burn of the download. at slow speed 10x but that was a bad burn all i got was the Icon no files
so cleaned disc and formatted it and did another burn.
That worked fine. list of folders and files on CD.
did a boot and Hey presto. worked great.
have had a look, and appears a bit daunting as i have never used anything but windows. but look forward to getting up and running.

I'm glad this could solve your issue ! Linux ISOs are known to be picky when burned, I had similar issues with lots of distro I tested so I always burn at the lowest settings and never had the problem since.
