I'm having problems, getting Java for ubuntu, please help!

you need to enable "canonical partner" repo into synaptic repo tab, then update

have you synaptic installed ? (you might as its default)
select "third party" tab into synaptic (system admin synaptic) and the first line might be "canonical partners": check the radio box (on)

look at synaptic: search "sun-java6.jre", select it for installation, that it.

But 10.10 synaptic doesn't contain "sun-java6.jre"

In Synaptic, click menus Settings, Repositories, Other Software tab, tick both boxes next to Canonical Partners. Close that window, click Reload, and you should now find sun-java6-jre.
