Hi guys...
Iīm loosing my hopes...

I have a laptop HD pavilion DV6910us and I always had problems with installation of other OS in there.
When I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 in it I always had the "I/O error"... "error no05"...
Until someone told me to disable ACPI in installation options...
After very times I managed to install 9.10 on it.

OK... everything was working fine... until I decided to upgrade last week to 10.04...
I have had alll kinds of problems during the upgrade using the update manager... after FIVE days os work lost (and money lost consequently) I could log in my laptop... but thereīs no nautilus runing, no window manager, no sound... I can run some programs by Cairo Doc Bar.... but the windows has no close button, minimize or maximize... Iīve already tried to run compiz again, replace metacity, but nothing seems to work...
Iīm desperated īcause I need my machine to work... there is no other OS in there.. almost 100GB of information in my home folder and no backup..
When I try to install the 10.10 version I have the feared message (unexpected error) after 60% of progress asking me to check my disc... Even if I use the NOACPI option it doesnīt work...
The disc is OK... I tested it in another machine...

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

This bold part is certainly a important point. If you had everything backed up you could then start trying fresh installs to find a working OS, it may be that this computer would run best on the original MS OS, I don't know.

Upgrading without a backup is a not a smart practice. Sorry to be to the point, but you will get the same basic advice from others on the forum.

You mention the 100 gigs in home, is this on a separate partition?, it will be helpful for others to know this.

It would be better to backup all your data and try to reinstall 10.04. Upgrades seem to cause problems sometimes, to be honest most of the times for me.

10.04 has worked on almost all the hardware I have. Nearly 15 PCs and all without any problems whatsoever.

Can you try to boot a 10.04 Live CD and if successful, test your hardware. If everything works, mount your data partition, copy it over to a safe location and reinstal Ubuntu 10.04. It will be supported till 2013 so if you get it working, no real hurry for upgrading. In the mean time you can think of an alternative if you want one.

Hey guys... I know upgrading without a backup is a foolishness...
But for me I supposed to only a simple "update"... I didn't expect for all those problems...

The data is on sda1, thje only logical partition... I created another partition with GParted where I tried to install the 10.10...

I thank you for your response but this kind a comments doesnt helps me

What Live CD's do you have available?

We need some idea of what's going on, the partitioning arrangement, etc. So if you have any Ubuntu Live CD, regardless of age, please post the output of the Boot Info Script as described here:

http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/

We may or may not be able to rescue the OS, but we can almost certainly save your data if you're patient and stop freaking out!

There are alternate instructions for using the Boot Info Script here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1291280

BUT! If you can't get a 10.10 Ubuntu Live CD to run on your machine I have doubts that you'll be able to use 10.10. I'd prefer if you could use a known good 10.04.1 Live CD because it's LTS and you said, "I always had problems with installation of other OS".

If you have enough disc space we can create a new OS and you can then move data from the "dead" OS to the new one.

It would also be helpful to see the output of:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

lspci | grep VGA

free

Troubleshoot first ........... freakout later :)

by the way... I can login into my native OS (Ubuntu 10.04 recently upgraded) but with no nautilus, no window manager, no close, minimize buttons, no sound, no changing language in my keyboard, etc just as I said...
I also can login with 9.10 live cd or 10.10 live cd

The bootscript will be the biggest help as well if you can.;) As well as the two other commands kansasnoob gave you. When you copy and paste text to a reply use the code tags, click on the # in the reply panel and put the text in between the code tags generated.
