View Full Version : [ubuntu] Unknown error during installation

I'm trying to install 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on my Lenovo Y530 laptop. I get an error during the installation, I've attached the screenshot.

When I click OK, the mouse pointer indicates that the system is loading something, but nothing happens.

Strangely enough, the exact same thing with the exact same error message happens when I try to install Ubuntu 9.10.

I have no idea what to do because the error message is, well, quite cryptic. I suppose it's not a hardware issue as I have been successfully running 64-bit Ubuntu on this machine. Any help?

I'd try to uncheck the Download Updates While Installing, and the Install third-party software check-boxes.

(I usually install them after a successful installation.)

Oh, I'm not that stupid, I've already tried all the simplest solutions. ;)

Right now I'm downloading the text-based Ubuntu installer to see if it helps.

Do you have any "unusual" setups like a RAID array or GPT?

regua

No. I've also never encountered any problems with installing an operating system, and I've installed quite a few.

did you check the ISO's MD5 before burning & before installing?
some CD's/DVD's have errors

Try hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1, then all the function keys in sequence until you get back to the GUI. It's possible there'll be a more intelligible error message on one of them (probably F1).

I just tried the text-based installation disc - same thing, but this time with a "Partition disks" header written above the question marks.

Normally I would just format the disk and it'd probably fix the problem, but this time I'm installing the system over an existing Ubuntu installation and I don't want to lose any personal data.

Using a LiveCD or LiveUSB, post the results from the boot-script linked at the bottom of my post please.

Perhaps the results will help us get to the bottom of this.

Thanks.

Using a LiveCD or LiveUSB, post the results from the boot-script linked at the bottom of my post please.
RESULTS.txt attached.

Also, I tried running the installation again, and this time when the ??? error appeared, a crash of the Parted server was reported. I googled the problem and the only solution I found was not to use certain types of USB flash drives; I'm running a LiveCD, though.

The only thing that struck me as odd was this, in reference to /dev/sda7:

Boot sector info: According to the info in the boot sector, sda7 starts
at sector 0. But according to the info from fdisk,
sda7 starts at sector 271482498.

I'm not an expert on FAT, though, so I don't know how much of a problem this is or whether it might cause the installer to act up. If the partition doesn't hold any important data, or if you can easily back it up, you might try deleting the partition and then trying again; however, this is a bit of a shot in the dark; there's a very good chance that it won't help.

Perhaps somebody else will spot a problem I missed....

Just had a look at Parted and some partitions seem to be out of order (/dev/sda5 at the end), but can that cause the error during installation? I'd rather not remove any partitions if that's absolutely necessary.

Partitions can be out of order. That's not an error, and I've never heard of the Ubuntu installer squawking unnecessarily about that. That said, out-of-order partitions can be confusing, so it's usually best to try to keep them in order. You can sort them by entering fdisk, typing "x" to get to the experts' menu, typing "f" to sort the partitions, and then typing "w" to save your changes. Be aware, however, that this can cause problems if your /etc/fstab file or boot loader refer to partitions by under rather than by their UUID values or labels.

None of the solutions worked, unfortunately.

I have browsed some similar bug reports, and many users claim that what causes the parted_server crash is a USB flash drive or an SD card connected to the computer during installation; I don't have any of these, I even disconnected my USB mouse to see if that helps but it didn't.

Any more ideas, guys? I really don't want to have to format the disk to install Ubuntu.

Well, I having same screen, with two disks without any so except windows.

The history is, I lost a 320G WD Disk and get a new 1TB Seagate Barracuda disk.

So my conf here is:

sda = 320G Seagate Barracuda
sdb = 1TB Seagate Barracuda

With that, and ** ANY ** operating system, the livecd doesn't works in install.

Switching HD positions, with ANY SO, not works too.

So I installed Windows 7 with following configuration:

sda = 1TB disk
sdb = 320G disk

Windows 7 get two partitions of SDA disk, with total of 80G.

Same stuff happens.

I have a microsoft wireless keyboard, and a usb mouse plugged, but it isn't really the problem. I used same media to install ubuntu two days before on SWAP partition of 320G disk, to rescue stuff of WD lost disk.

Maybe that is something related to BIG disks, >= 500G ?

I note that Boot Info Script is reporting that /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd, /dev/sde, and /dev/sdf all exist but have no media present. Do you have any removable disks, USB flash drives, CF card readers, or the like in the system? If so, try unplugging them. If not, then something is causing Linux to mistakenly believe you've got disks that you don't have, and you should investigate that. Along those lines, if those disks really aren't present, boot the Ubuntu live CD, open a Terminal, type "dmesg", and post the output here.

Nop, any other kind of storage connect.

After all, I disconnect my sdb (320G Disk), and tryed again, then installed normally (finished just now).

The 320G disk have a BIG FAT32 partition and a 8G swap, it's normal and don't makes any sense disconnect it to install, but worked hehe... after install I connect it again and access it normally.

I tried mounting all partitions before installation so the installer couldn't use them, but that doesn't help.

Any more ideas, guys?
