I've had this issue now since 10.04 and I can't find anything to help me resolve it.

Error:

W:Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)
, W:Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'archive.canonical.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I do get updates but the updater continues to give me this message and frankly it's becoming quite annoying.

I'm currently on a full install of 10.10 32bit (Not an upgrade from 10.04)

that's my source list

I would appreciate some help to get this problem resolved.

Other than adding a ppa for Wine I haven't touched the repositories list.

Did you simply try chaning the update server to Main from Software Center > Edit > Software Sources?

kurotsuno

it is set to main and I have tried other servers and that doesn't seem to resolve it.

Ok. Please post the output of

cat /etc/hosts

Does it list your hostname?

grepcat

I guess x.x.x.31 is your router's address?

What happens if you use a public DNS (e.g. Google's: 8.8.8.8 ?

kurotsuno

works just fine with the 8.8.8.8 dns hmmm what could be wrong with my dns ?

grepcat

Rumors circulate that ISPs block connections to certain addresses. x.x.x.31 is your router, and your router asks your ISP DNS.

Hence the "something wicked" in the error!

Glad it's working out. 8.8.8.8 is fast and router/isp/connection independent. Hooray for Google.

An utter pleasure.

I don't quite know whether this merits a [SOLVED] or not...

I tested it out with my isp's dns and it seems to work just fine as well.
