This might be the wrong place to post this question (or more this pile of wild thoughts) but I see myself unable to locate a better place for it.

So after doing some extended reading tasks related to prepare myself for the occasional switch over to gnome shell I came across some articles which told about canonicals plans to remove the notification area for ubuntu. While I strongly agree with this plan I'm wondering how this will be handled in gnome shell.

As far as I can see, gnome shell does use the typical notification area. Which in turn means that gnome shell and ubuntu are taking potentially confronting approaches to this topic.

So... is there any intel on how this will be handled and even further: whats your opinion on that?

I have no idea about Canonicals plans for the Gnome Shell. Though I do think if they plan to migrate to it they will build a way to sort out the notification area on the shell.

I believe you're talking about Windicators (http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/333) and the plan to move them from the panel into the windows themselves. Is that it?

Actually I am talking about the icons applications like Skype for Linux or Me-TV place right left to gnome panel applets like the network manager or the message menu inside the notification area box. I thought these are systray (or notification area) icons as they just behave like those in windows. Profiding a status icon / menu button if the application is minimized. As far as I understand your link, no these are not the windicators.

It looks like gnome shell is developing diametrical to canonicals efforts to get rid of the notification area as it provides are clearly defined notification area.

No, he's talking about Canonical's plan to remove the old GNOME Notification Area completely.
