By Leo King | Computerworld UK | Published 10:51, 20 October 10

The London Stock Exchange has said its new Linux-based system is delivering world record networking speed, with 126 microsecond trading times.

The news comes ahead a major Linux-based switchover in twelve days, during which the open source system will replace Microsoft .Net technology on the group’s main stock exchange...

Something you won't read in the "Highly Reliable Times" I'm sure. :)

What a breathtaking win for the Linux operating system!

The LSE was featured by Microsoft in one of their case studies. http://web.archive.org/web/20080303191622/www.microsoft.com/casestudies/casestudy.aspx?casestudyid=51828. Then in September 2008 the Microsoft Windows system went down causing hundreds of millions of dollars in trading losses http://blogs.computerworld.com/london_stock_exchange_suffers_net_crash.

By the way the LSE was the only one of the major exchanges that was running Windows. The rest are running GNU / Linux for the most part. So if one wants to trade long or short  on MSFT chances are GNU / Linux is used to complete the trade.

Faster doesn't mean safer when it comes to stock transactions. The pace of transactions today is so fast that no human can keep up with them. Witness the incredible dip in the indexes last spring (http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/10/01/2048222/SEC-Blames-Computer-Algorithm-For-Flash-Crash).

It's all well-and-good that Linux is fast, and apparently faster than Windows, for these tasks, but you've got to wonder how human financial regulators will be able to protect investors when it all happens in microseconds or less.

Microsoft Exchange is a Windows product for email and collaboration. Stock exchange. Linux. Microsoft does not do Linux. :)

The post mentioned Microsoft Exchange Linux NOT Microsoft Exchange. A download link to a trial version of the former is what I was looking for.......good sir.

How true and ironic. Automated trading can send MSFT or AAPL plunging in microseconds thanks to the brutal efficiency of GNU / Linux.
